i7 920 @ 3.80GHz bundle not stable?

Hello, I have purchased a bundle, and I think it is not stable because it goes over 100c when I run Prime95 for a few seconds, so I closed my PC immediately. Here are the temps idle. Am I doing something wrong, or did OcUK ship me an unstable bundle?

Edit: Motherboard is Gigabyte UD5, memory is Patriot Viper 6GB, heatsink is Noctua-NHU12P, Noctua thermal paste (I didn't get AS5)

How much thermal compound did you apply? I had similar issues with my 4.0GHz bundle and found the best way to do it (assuming your using AS5) is to go onto the arctic silver site and follow their instructions. This improved my temps by 10 - 15 degrees however they are still slighty high. With a 4.0GHz overclock I am now getting 48 degrees idle and 80 degrees under prime. I am happy with the load temps but the idle temps still seem a little bit high but Im hoping they will improve as the AS5 cures.

Zavoc I have the same setup as you but I brought it clocked at 4GHZ.

I too didn't use AS5, I normal do for all my systems but on this occasion I ran out and used the stuff which came with the Noctua HS.

The difference though my idle temps are roughly the same as B34st 44 - 48 degrees.

B34st - Could you do us a favour and post yur temps once the AS5 has cured. If it has made a difference, then I'll pull apart my system and use that stuff.

Zavoc - Possible you used too much paste or not enough? I agree with b34st and follow the Artic silver website. Also what case do you have? Do you have adequate airflow to the system? What's the room temp like?

>b34st

I didn't get AS5, so I had to use the paste I got with my heatsink (Noctua).
48 degrees idle with 4.0GHz, now I am sure something is wrong.

I have a Cosmos 1000, it comes with 4 casefans, and the room temp is around 22 Celsius. That shouldn't be a problem.

I might just buy AS5 as well (I am from The Netherlands, so the delivery will cost more to me than the product itself).

wow, temps are definitely way to high...

Out of curiosity, what case do you have??

@oggiet, if he was to test out the stock HSF with his processor clocked to 3.8GHz he would probably have similar temps to what he has right now as they are garbage...

the only thing I can think of is the Noctua isn't seated properly (which you have already checked), not enough/to much TIM, or your case doesn't have good airflow...

Hope you get the problem fixed soon, because those temps are unacceptable..

::edit::

@OP, isn't there any computer shops near where you live that sell AS5?

I thought these bundles were supposed to come with AS5 anyway?

Hmmm, I just had a look at these overclocked bundles, and you are supposed to get some AS5 as a part of the deal...

This Bundle contains the following components:

1 X Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz overclocked up to 4.00GHz! (Choose overclocking option above.)
1 X Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
1 X Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600MHz) Low Latency Tri-Channel
1 X Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366)
1 X Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)

Send OcUK a webnote and tell them you never got any shipped with your bundle...

Why don't you put it back to stock speeds and see what happens? You should be able to comfortably pick up the motherboard with the Noctua if it's seated correctly. How much TIM are you using? A small sized pea is a good size. Maybe take of the heatsink and make sure the CPU is mostly all covered.

Ah nicely found. Try and get some AS5, however there is no way it would decrease his temps by 20C. My 920 at 4Ghz goes to just under 80C with a Noctua and AS5.

I agree with you, there is no way that AS5 will lower the temps by that much!!

The only things that it can really be that is causing these silly temps is the incorrect installation of the HSF, or poor airflow inside your case (assuming you build it inside a case?)...

You could test this by building the system up outside the case to see if it makes any difference...

Or maybe it is the bottom of your cooler or the IHS on the processor that is really warped and they aren't making proper contact??

I have a Coolermaster Cosmos 1000, which comes with 4 casefans. I don't think that is the problem. Also, I will send the webnote tomorrow, in a hurry right now. Thank you very much.

Yes, I just tried that. Here are the temps at stock speed.

I just applied 4-5mm, the manual also says so.

Those temps seem ok to me
I know its most probably not but have you tried to turn your heatsink 90 degrees to see if that might be the problem ...... just hoping it might be that

I read a thread the other day from someone experiencing high temps with their i7 rig, and they also had a Cosmos... I can't find the thread, but it was definitely on these forums..

Excuse the language but **** I just ordered some AS5 and you're right I'm suppose to get get it with the bundle. Webnote on it's way.

Zavoc - The last set of temps you posted is my current idle temps using the standard heat paste which came with the HS.

Just wondering but which way is your HS fan blowing? I'm using a Antec 902 case. I've got the HS fan blowing towards the top of the case where the 200mm fan sits.
