As per title really, are there any free alternatives out there that work and are user friendly?

Don't fancy having to stump up 35 euros for Winrar, although I will if there are no good alternatives.

Thanks

Indeed, 7zip is a great replacement for WinRAR.

It has similar features as WinRAR, you can integrate the operations into the shell/context menus, it works with rar and zip compression, the 7z format seems to compact smaller than rar and best of all its free.

I remember using Winzip back in the day. After the free trial was up you could just click "continue to use" or whatever and it would just let you and count the days. I used it for over a year on the 30 day trial, win.

IIRC the only real limitation with 7zip is that it can't actually make RAR files, only unrar them? Not the end of the world really, if you don't have winrar. PC magazines give it away on their DVDs occasionally if you look around.

Yeah, think I will just put up with the nag screen for now, as I do prefer Winrar's interface to 7zip. Might buy it if it's ever on special offer.
