Winrar - any decent free alternatives?

Well.... I suppose there might be some situations where filetype is validated and .7z would get rejected in situations where .rar is accepted. But generally speaking we should be trying to promote the use of .7z as it has decent compression and is freeware.

Nanozip is one to watch too, only in alpha right now but is a better compressor than 7zip ultra and already has a (very basic!) windows GUI.
 
If you're just going to only ever decompress archieves then WinRAR would be fine. Just use the right-click context menu likes others have said. I've personally used it for years and haven't come across any limitations as of yet. :)

7zip is good though and does have better compression. I'd probably be using it but I've just become too accustomed to using WinRAR. A few others I've used that were good were WinAce and ZipCentral.
