New Sky broadband and DLM

I've just taken a full sky package and as they offered me Broadband Everyday for only a fiver I thought I'd give it a whirl.
Normally I use Virgin cable which has been perfect for me.
Ive done some reading on Sky users forum and learned about DLM so I gave the Sky tech people a ring :

me: how long does your DLM take on a new install?
him: 10 days minimum
me: so I wont know if the connection is good until after 10 days then?
him: correct
me:if its a bad connection I wont be able to cancel then.
him: why not?
me:because its taking me over my 8 days cooling off period for cancellation!

long silence followed by:
"no-ones ever brought that up before, call us after 7 days and we'll tell you the lines capabilities"

Maybe I'm being anal about this but I can't believe Sky aren't doing this deliberately.

The 10 days should only apply if the connection's via BT Wholesale, but you'll know what the connection's like in the first five minutes...

This is the bit on the SkyUser forum:

"How Long Does the DLM process last?
The DLM process can take up to 20 days or even longer in extreme circumstances. But its usually 10 days min."

and that was posted by the forum founder!
If they are wrong I'll be delighted.

Sky are retards. Tv is good but their customer service team is ran by thousands of untrained ( or not properly trained ) spastics

That's definitely not right, but it's not important.
Your connection will be near enough as fast as it's ever going to be inside a day, regardless of any DLM process (which will only deal with instability anyway; why ISPs insist on clinging to "profiling" etc is curious).

That's different from virgin, how...?

Its not, virgin are worse. After a 30 minute call to Sky yesterday it was finally established that we do actually need a BT phone line installing. This was after I had previously rang Sky 3 times to double check that we dont need an engineer as we have an NTL phone port. They were adamant that we already had one dispite me telling them we are a ground floor flat and there are 4 different flats in our building.

There is a line active in our house, but not ours! Eventually I was put onto somebody who had some sense and figured out that NTL is cable and goues into the ground so thats why we dont have a dial tone or any net signal.

Sky's broadband was actually surprisingly good for me (maxed 16 meg connection). I had sworn by independent, or semi independent ISPs for years (Nildram, Entranet) and switched to Sky after I stopped gaming to save some money. Their support team, on the other hand, are totally rubbish. You have to stamp your feet and jump through hoops for them to help, even if the problem is caused by them.

The only way I can cope with Sky's support systems is to threaten to cancel my TV package every time they make an unreasonable demand (like trying to charge me £60+ quid to fix my dish when the LMB failed).

With Sky they'll start you off on a basic speed & from there it will rise & fall till it finds a "stable" speed so they say.

On the max package it started off as 4mb/764k & went higher from there.

After all I've read on here and elsewhere and listened to neighbours experiences I've decided not to have Sky broadband installed.
I'm going to stick with my existing Virgin cable connection as its always been faultless.
I know it will cost me a little more but I really couldn't stand the hassle!

Have you looked at talktalk? Are they an LLU on your exchange? If so, be advised they do NOT use Dynamic Line Management equipment in the exchange, they us MSAN - Multi-Service Access Nodes and you are able to contact them via their forum and they can change the profile within minutes to what you want.

Some LLU's have jumped ahead of BT when it comes to this type of profile setting.

That is correct.

I had my Sky activated yesterday morning and it has been sat at 4mbps downstream and 510kbps upstream.

I even received a letter on the Monday advising me they will be starting my line at 4mbps and increasing as the days go on. Still waiting for any increase though. I'll give them their due, so far even the 4mbps is solid and thats morning, afternoon and evening with no decrease. Lets hope I can get to 13mbps like my neighbour :)

Just make sure you don't reboot or turn off your modem in the 10days :) Took mine about 2 - 3 days to start increasing the speed.

I agree tolien, But I think they have made it this way cause far too many people were getting unstable speeds from the get go & obviously that doesn't go down too well with complaints etc. I could be mistaken though.

Should also add, that when my DLM finished it capped my speeds at 9mb, quick phone call to Sky sorted it out & they raised my connection to 13mb, No problems with the line dropping either.

Don't even get me started on this lot... There was a special offer on once, and when I called the woman who answered refused to give me it, saying "how are they going to be able to afford to pay me". I couldn't believe it, since when was a phone operators decision to make company policy...

I just hung up and called back to someone who had half a brain and got it sorted.

Still, I would rather be with someone else, however it is for the grandparents.

i love my Sky BB, it could be abit faster but 6-8 meg is fast enough tbh.

Never had a problem with it other than i seem to some how make the router crash every now & then

DLM is now kicking in. Woke up this morning to 10mbps down and 750kbps up and looks stable so far. Ping times have dropped from the 70's to the 40's. Wonder if they have me on fastpath but will discuss that with them after the 10 day period.

Noise margin is significantly lower than it was with BT. Not sure why though. Better equipment perhaps?

Lets see if we can get it any higher. Fingers crossed for 12 - 14mbps :)

Just downloaded a test file and got 1MB/s so very happy so far.

Noticed my pings have dropped significantly too within the last week, a most welcome change (so perhaps you've joined at just the right moment). Was getting about 68ms to Jolt previously, now 32ms. Incidentally, from reading SkyUsers forum, they do not use fastpath with anyone.

As long as the ping stays in its constant 40's I will be happy as only really play TF2 & L4D.

I'm sure they are able to switch you to fastpath if ping times are stupidly high as a few members here have had it switched with Sky.

I have streamed, hit the newsgroups and done some gaming this morning just to max out the connection and it seems stable enough. Might as well make the best as i'm off work ill at the moment.
