I had an awesome remote control about 10 years ago in my room that did everything, computer, light switches, alarm clock, the lot.

It was a 5ft long bamboo pole and my room was only an 8ft cube

I'm quite like that. When we went on holiday to Ibiza about 10 years ago my wife whinged at me because as soon as we got to the hotel I just slobbed down on the settee and watched the telly all evening rather than "go out and enjoy the nightlife".

When my remote used to run out of batteries years ago I just used to take them out, rub them, put them back in then hammer the remote off the chair arm a few times. Failing that, the snooker cue was brought down to aid in channel changing.

if my batteries break i'd either switch it off or watch a dvd. too many channels/adverts to watch without a remote.

i just bought a freeview box instead. it controls the volume and all the channels. and it was only a few quid more than a replacement remote.

I'm not lazy I get up and do use the controls on the set itself.

But slightly off topic, on holiday in Spain once they had TVs in the rooms where the remotes were necessary the set had no controls at all. You had to rent the remote from reception.

When leaving I turned the TV up full blast on the bad Spanish music station and turned it off, the next guests must have had a nice shock and panic when turning the TV on not realising they need the remote.
