Well, as per the title. I'm used to leaving the router plugged in and connected 24/7 but lately the router has been incredibly hot to the touch. The router itsself is possibly 3 years old. Is it time for a new router? Or are these ones notoriously hot?

By the way I should mention that even after leaving the router unplugged from the mains for several hours, upon re insertion of the power cable the router is getting very hot within around half an hours use.

The devices that are connected to it are a desktop PC and an Apple MacBook.

Cheers in advance. :)

My DG834G and GTs never got more than vaguely warm. Make sure there's no dust build-up, and site it somewhere open and on a flat surface. If you have the option, also use a stand so that it's stood vertical rather than horizontal. Definitely sounds dodgy to me, though.

Alright well I'll give it a blast with some compressed air or something because I'm sure that there's bound to be some dust build up in there. Cheers. :)

May be worth passwording your wireless, as someone could be streaming things off your computer (or some other very heavy useage - making it hot).

I would not worry about it, if it dies then a new one isn't too costly:)

Yeah, it's passworded, WPA PSK. There's 3 devices connected to it, but only one is ever powered up at a time. As you said, that particular router is only cheap anyway and to get almost 4 years of daily abuse out of it has certainly made it a bargain. :)
