Just bought a motorbike - no license. Fastest way to get one?

600 ninja, nice.

Not sure I'd have got it as a first bike though. I have a 1995 one, swopped to it from a '92 ZZR600 (previous bikes before that were a string of 125s and an ancient CB250) and it was a total shock for the first week or so.

Totally solid motorbike though - it's not a delicate flower like some sportsbikes can be, and great fun to ride - it goes where you point it, and feels nice and stable at 100mph+

Only downside is it can be a bit cramped if you have long legs, and the fairing is a bit useless for finding places to attach bungies to - luggage can be awkward.

OP, I did exactly as you did, Bought a ZX6R brand new, all the gear, then went and did my test.

Was a fine first bike, then did a superbike course after passing, no issues for me.

No accidents, no issues with insurance, was around £500 iirc

It gets much cheaper as you get older.
I'm 39 with 1 yrs no claims riding a GSXR 750 and my insurance Fully Comp is £170.
TPFT is £120:p

You can't beat the feeling of blatting about when the sun is out, great fun.:D

Nice bike to get as well.

One thing I've wondered about but never bothered to look up is how much does all the bike gear costs? (Helmet, Leathers, Boots etc)

With all new stuff, you can do it for £400 with no worries, but personally I'd recommend £7-800 for stuff you'll want to keep hold of. The kit I wear right now, for example:

Wolf leather trousers: £200
Wolf textile jacket: £150
TCX boots: £120
Dainese Gloves (summer): £50
Richa Gloves (wet/winter): £50
Shoei Raid II : £200 inc dark visor

£770... and I can wear that stuff in pretty much all weathers. The boots are halfway between a proper race boot and a dull touring/wet boot, the leather/textile mix I find is best for all-round riding, and they zip together, there's no such thing as a glove you can wear all year hence two pairs.

I've got loads of bike kit, but this is the stuff I wear 99% of the time, regardless of weather. I commute as well. I feel this kit is bang on for me in terms of value for money and versatility. Waterproofs'll run you about £30, which brings it up to a round £800 :)

I've also got a £100 backpack, but that's because I've murdered more than one bag on the bike, flapping straps can genuinely hurt when they wallop you on the arse at high speed, and one day I walked in the door and noticed in the mirror that my bag had split and a £800 Macbook and my girlfriend's £200 Alpinestar leather trousers were 3/4 of the way out! I figured a decent bag was a worthwhile investment at that point! It's as comfy as anything, I can ride with it fully stuffed (including a helmet!) and I can't feel the weight at all, it's like it's not there. It's a Kriega R35.

To add... I got my girlfriend kitted out for about £600, I think, that's all leather stuff (RST & Alpinstars), Astars waterproof race boots (flasher than mine), and a Caberg V2 that was half price. Already had gloves. All her stuff is really nice, and the only things we got a 'deal' on were the half price lid and got some knocked off the Astars jeans, I think they were meant to be £200 and I got them for £165 or thereabouts. If you have a scout around and it's important to save money, it can be done fairly easy, especially with places like J&S about.

J&S always seem to have offers on, so as mentioned above they might be worth checking out My kit was cheaper but then I bought off a well known auction site and I got quite lucky with the fitting. I spent £30 on boots, about £100 on leathers (jacket and 2x trousers - one pair didn't fit but I gave them away rather than resell). Bought new lid and gloves at ~ £300. If you can't try things on though you could spend a lot until you get good items.
