TrackIR 5

Wasn't just me though, several friends of mine have tried it and they all say the same. Games just are not the same again without the TrackIR. For instance i loaded up Arma2 accidentally without running the TrackIR sotware and i felt like a blinkered horse on a railway line! It was just bad lol

My experience was the same, but that does not mean that anybody who says they couldn't get on with it is wrong or talking rubbish as you stated.

I have recently bought TrackIR 4 to use in Arma2 as infantry, it took no setting up and to my surprise no getting used to, the default settings feel natural and scoping the area for enemys is spot on, as is leaning around buildings to take a sneaky peak before moving from cover, i bought TrackIR 4 over 5 because of reports that in practice 5 is not really any better than 4 and is now available in the UK for less than £100.
In short, very happy with it, worth the money and recommend it to anyone.

Aaaaah but they are. Only a complete nOOdle would find it hard to get used to a TrackIR. Read the comments, everyone loves em! Fair enough, the odd gamin' 'nOOb child' might find em a bit iffy, mainly as they find it hard to sit still due to them being stoked up on sugar, you know the type, the ones who get travel sick and puke even at the sight of a car. Thats the ones who can't get used to TrackIR, not forgetting the Queen mother and shep from BluePeter.

Can this be used to control your character's movement and attacks in other games? Such as Oblivion or COD

No, only works in games with support for TIR built in. You could use it as a mouse emulator for unsupported games, but I doubt it would work very well.

I take it at this point that youre pulling his plonker. Trackir is a great bit of kit, been using it since v2, wouldnt fly without it. Its use on the ground is substantially more limited because of a lack of orientation especially when you need to shoot at a particular target and knowing where your gun is pointing in relation to where youre looking. This can be overcome by using the pause/centre button but the leap from a flightsim HAT switch to trackir view is a thousand times more pronounced than going from a FPS mouselook to trackir, especially where 6dof is considered.

I'd like to try it before I even considered buying it, it just looks so awkward and pointless.

The guy in that video seems to think it's good because you can look around whilst still running in a uniform direction and only moving your head rather than your body, but this could all be implemented with a mouse and keyboard anyway.

TrackIR is superb, I bought the 5 a few weeks ago and although I have only played it a bit in ArmA II, I am totally sold. It is only because I have been playing Planetside on a free month's sub that I haven't used it more. What is really needed is for the users of this hardware to scream it from the rooftops to get it written into games. If this got implemented in COD or one of the Battlefield series fully it would clean up.

Use it for Arma1 and 2, hate playing with out it, nice with a 24" wide screen and you can look at the sides of the screen rather than your head turning too much and straining eyes looking to the side :p

Don't like it in FS9/FSX in 3d cockpit because with turbulence the plane moves around and with your head, it moves around so it's impossible to use any controls using the mouse like changing the hdg/alt/speed/radio etc.

Looks good for black shark but need a decent joystick for that as mine sucks :)

There is something called Freetrack i think which is spoken highly of. It doesnt work with ArmaII though. Support has been given in OFP2 though and FSX + loads of others.

The idea with Freetrack is you make the headset yourself. Gave it a go myself, I used a Wiimote and some infra red leds stuck on a cap.

My DIY projects always look better in my head than in reality though. Ended up buying a TrackIR. There are some pretty good guides out there though. There is a pretty amazing video of a guy doing a demo with the wii mote and a headset to give a 3D effect.

Going to get this a bit later today.

One question though: I read somewhere something about it needing some Bluetooth stack connection? Is this true?

News to me. The Track Clip connects via USB and the "camera" part connects into that USB before it connects to the pc. No mention of Bluetooth that I have seen.

I think this could be ace, but as said it sucks that he has to aim his eyes at the screen, it would require a screen that actually needs you to move your head.

One of these and a 1080p projector?

You mean like this?

Nate

EDIT:- BTW it is actually easier to use on a smaller screen.

The software is fully adjustable, the movement you make with your head can be neglible if you want. It then magnifies the movement on screen.
