Im going to university in september and was wondering do i need to buy a TV license? do they check? anybody else at uni that can shine some light on this? thanks

If you have a TV in your halls room, yes you do need a license.

Will you be found out? Hard to say. I had a TV in my room for most of my first year and I didn't get done for it.

There are loads of threads about this ...... maybe a search would have helped?

Now that I'm here; if you use a tv (receiving aparatus) for watching 'live' tv, you need a license; whether or not you buy one, is up to you ...... the chances of being caught are very small if you refuse access to anyone without a warrant to search and say absolutely nothing.

There has yet to be ANY conviction using evidence from a "detector van", so ask yourself if they actually exsist in the way that the TV Licensing people would like you to believe.

Choice is yours, risk is yours .......... if you go for the risk, make sure that you inform all housemates etc about not speaking to or giving access to the so called enforcement officers, otherwise they will get you convicted.

well i has in hall at edinburgh for my first year. and yes they checked. Aparently your more likely to get busted in halls than anywhere elce as they traget them knowing a lot of studentsd dont buy tv licences.

Anyway just use iplayer 4od etc and anything elce just do to someones room that has one thats what i did

yeh but i have a 40" flat screen at home in my room and would be taking that

a 40" tv in university halls wow. SOme guy in our block had one of those it took up his whole desk and blocked out his window. Although it was epic he only used it to play his PS3, kinda pointless really. I dont miss having a tv at uni at all i just watched everything on iplayer and 4od.

Why bother, just use bbc iplayer to watch what ever you want. At least that way u dont need to pay that stupid feee.

So how do you prove that you've never watched a BBC live stream on the computer ? It seems to me that TVL are basically stating that ownership of a broadband enabled PC is enough to require the purchase of a licence.
