Anything to be gained from a K&N filter?

those 20vt ones do glow well, has to be something to do with the manifold design.

i remember when being a geek with the mr2, the inlet manifold used to get so hot that rain would sizzle when it landed on it :(

I've got a K&N filter on my Octavia, my thoughts-

Noticable increase in induction noise.
Less wheezy sounding higher up the revs.
Slightly improved throttle response.

theres a video on youtube somewhere of the inlet manifold glowing bright red on a dyno on a tuned Astra VXR. The inlet manifolds can get very hot on turbo cars.

Surely you mean the exhaust manifold?

If it was the inlet manifold glowing red, something would be very very very wrong!

I've had mine glowing a few times... once was on the RR at Powerstation :D

a K&N on a stock motor means one thing - a lot more miles. it will outlive the car. all you do is clean it. it can be more beneficial on tuned motors but with more modern cars they should adapt the running/fueling to suit.

They sound nice.
I had one of those and a full stainless exhaust on my 1.8 si many years ago, just because it made it sound nice.

K&N panel filter - £35
OEM filter - £5

At 12,500 miles between services, it will take 87,500 miles to break even.... I doubt many people could justify one on that basis alone

I think I am going to make a selection of air filters and sell them with wild power claims and promises of epic BHP increments. I will call them Housey Hoovers I think, probably with something like P-Tec technology (yay rather than yo) and basically they will be boxes with nothing in them, but make a great induction noise and do nothing about cleaning the air......but think of the horses!

I see money rolling in.

wrong. you have to buy the filter oil. one bottle costs about £10 if you shop around and will do about 2 services

then there is the hassle of washing the filter in petrol etc

stick with the paper one!

redline mag dynod a k&n on a 20vt and it lost 15bhp

I honestly can't see how any drop in filter could make that much of a negative difference.

I may swap back to standard filters in the near future anyway as I can't be arsed with the cleaning process.
