I just went round to the spares shop to get some cheap oil to run my engine in. Was looking for the £4.99/gal 20W50 stuff, so decided to check elsewhere when I saw it was £8.99. Anyway, the other shops had the same stuff for £12 and £11 so I ended up going back to the first place

And the price of the good stuff OMFG

When did the prices go up that much?

Oil has always been expensive hasn't it? Cheapest I've ever paid was £15 for 5 litres of Ford 5w30, most I've paid was £15 for 1 litre of Edge 0w30.

I pay around £40 for 4L of oil for my car - has to conform to various standards etc.
You pays your money and you get the quality.

Maybe it's just the fact that not many cars use thick basic oil any more and it's becoming more scarce? 5W30 and the like was well over £20 and it was the cheap brand, not Castrol etc.

I've spent £1.8million so far this year developing the stuff, its not cheap to develop nor make.

Lies, we all know that you get an oil rig. Set it out at sea, plumb it up and whooooosh Castrol GTX comes out. Happy days ;)

have a look for Motul 8100 eco energy

im sure i found this for £26.99 inc VAT for 5l....and its ester based synthetic or whatever that means?!

i dont know if its the *best* but surely better than halfords own?!

I reckon the price of engine oil has gone up quite a bit actually, but then again the quality has also improved. I have lots of receipts from when I had my MR2 showing I used to buy 5L of 10W40 Valvoline "fully synthetic" (though probably not 'real' synthetic) for about £16 at my local motor factors, but even the cheapest never-heard-of-them brands are quite a bit more than that now.

Wow, wish I could find engine oil for £9 a gallon!

Nothing sensibly priced around here, so as mine's due for a change it'll be getting 6l of Mobil Super S semi-synthetic. Not much change from £40. :(

I paid £50 for 5L of Silkolene Pro-S 5W-40 before xmas and 6 months prior it was £45.

I don't think prices have risen much, its just the choice is narrowing from store to store so they inflate prices.

The Manta lives on Motorway 20/50 which used to be £4.99 but you struggle to find it at that price, or stocked at all these days.

I've had to do that before, not cheap!

Both her TDi and my RS4 take the same oil and we never really buy it sensibly. I put a litre in mine today as when I checked it was just on the minimum and it does like to drink the stuff, around 3 litres between services presently.

That can't be normal.

My old 5 hasn't drunk/burnt a drop in 5k miles, it's done 111,000 and thats with 0w40.

Opie oils can be good for the harder to find oils and has a wide range, they offer discounts (30% last month) quite a bit which more than covers postage, and Mobil F/S 0w40 is £23 (5L)
