I know there is an existing TV show thread, but most of the suggestions on it bore the hell out of me. I'm looking for something new to watch, currently plodding through season 1 of both True Blood and Dexter but have nothing really to look forward to after that.

All time favorites: BSG, B5, The Wire, The Shield, Lost, Band Of Brothers, True Blood, Sopranos, The X-Files, Oz

Just short of favorites: Generation Kill, Dexter, Spooks, 24, Nip/Tuck, Millenium, Six Feet Under, Twin Peaks

Ones I watch to kill time: Prison Break, Heroes, Fringe, Jericho, Terminator, ST:NG, ST:DS9, ST:Voyager

Shows I outright hate: Law & Order, All CSI, Entourage, Smallville, Buffy, Bones, All Stargate, Ghost Whisperer, Las Vegas, Firefly, Andromeda, Reaper, Farscape, The Unit

I should add i'm not really after comedy stuff, dark/black comedy is ok, but aside from that not too fussed about funny shows, already have my fix sorted there.

I'm open to all suggestions but at least based around what i've said I do/don't like above, the shows I don't like I have watched a significant number of episodes and my mind is made up on them.

EDIT: Current suggestions i'll be checking out...

Burn Notice
Breaking Bad
The West Wing
Warehouse 13
Carnivale
Deadwood S2...possibly
The 4400

Could you summarise them for me, the premise, what they're similar to.

Breaking Bad: Pretty unique show, a guy is diagnosed with a terminal illness, and decides to do exciting things i.e cooking crystal meth, also deals with family life keeping the drug stuff secret.

Chemistry: the study of change. Apply heat and, boom, no going back. Meet Walter White, high school chemistry teacher. Sleepwalking through life when, boom, a terminal diagnosis changes everything. Liberates him. Empowers him to use his chemistry skills anew: to man a rolling drug lab and finance the future for his struggling family. It's an uncontrolled experiment with the American dream. And it finally wakes him up.

Burn Notice: Think Spooks, a spy drama with plenty of action,

Secret agent Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) just received a burn notice -- a statement that a spy is unreliable and has been effectively fired -- for unknown reasons. Now, Westen must find out who issued the notice and why they did it without being able to use the resources and contacts he once had at his disposal.

Both Breaking Bad & Burn Notice sound pretty good, the latter more to my tastes admittedly but will give them a shot in due time.

However, one more thing i'd like to mention, i'm not interested in giving anything a shot that has been cancelled without coming to a proper end. There was a recent show with Christian Slater, can't remember what it was called, but was just getting into it, then read it was cancelled. Also same thing happened with Sarah Connor Chronicles :(

If you're a fan of BSG then you absolutely must watch some Star Trek, start with the best (The Next Generation), 7 seasons of absolute heaven :D I've recently finished watching them all again and can't wait to start at Season 1 once more :p Then there's Voyager.. Enterprise...

You should get Sons of Anarchy best series in ages.

star trek is utter pants. At least suggest firefly or andromeda if going the space route.

I recommend Reaper, I've been really enjoying it, on episode 12 of season 2.

Is it true it's been cancelled and the 13th episode is the last one? :(

It's pretty funny, but looking at your likes/hates, it may not be up your street, though i love most of the stuff you loved.

As I said in the first post, not really after comedy :(

Shameless, Faulty towers? (oldie but hilarious)

As I just said, not really after comedy...although I did watch season 1 of Shameless and it was excellent, just never got around to the rest of it.

Oz. Another HBO classic, my joint favourite show with The Wire.

Oh yes, should have added this to my all time favorites list, have watched from start to finish about 3 times now.

Ive been watching Warehouse 13 lately and im really enjoying it, think of a cross between Indiana Jones and X-files, sounds stupid but it's lots of fun.

Definately sounds up my street, will give this a try.

Have watched Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager in their entirity...none of them are a patch on BSG and DS9 is a very poor B5 copy, but I did enjoy them nonetheless. Don't get me started on Enterprise...utter rubbish!

At least suggest firefly or andromeda if going the space route.

Check my hates list ;)

I did give this a shot but it didn't really work on any level for me :(

Entourage and The West Wing. Two AMAZING shows.

Once again, check my hates list...never did try watching The West Wing though, might look out for this on the cheap.

Will just edit my first post to add in some stuff i'd missed out as well.

I like BSG but imo it doesn't compare to TNG :p Each to their own, I've just started Season 4 of Enterprise and I'm loving it :D

At the time it was first broadcast I was a huge TNG fan, then a few years later along came B5 and changed the face of sci-fi in my eyes forever, now I just can't go back to episodic story telling...it's an arc or nothing for me ;)

I know what you mean, one of the (probably few once the honeymoon period has worn off) redeeming features of Season 3 of Enterprise is the ongoing theme of 'The Weapon'. I've not given B5 a chance yet, maybe I should..

Anyway sorry I couldn't give you more suggestions :D
