Morning all. :)

It looks like I may have to move to London for 6 Months and so I am looking at accommodation, but as a London newbie I need some help

Here are my requirements (some may appear daft admittedly).

-Studio or 1 bed not fussed.
-Don't need parking
-Do not want to flat share/ room share at all
-Walking distance or very short bus ride to Canary Wharf.
-If not in walking distance I would like views of Canary wharf if its across the river.

My max budget is around £200pw or £900pm is this possible or do I need to put down the crack pipe? :p

If so can you recommend areas to look at.

I would be interested to see this since some parts of Edinburgh are more than £900pm and London is a lot more expensive than Edinburgh.

Edit: if it's only 6 months just flat share. You will save money.

Should be possible but it'll be a bit grotty for £900 a month. Why not flat share? It's the ideal way, especially as you're new to London. Might even make some friends!

£900 by yourself isnt going to happen, get a flat share!

I live on the isle of dogs(mudchute), its awesome about 10 minutes walk to canary wharf and a 15 minute walk to Greenwhich via foot tunnel so plenty of places to go out. I pay about £650 inc bills for my room in a 3 bed house with garden , garage and drive way on a private road seconds from the docks.

infact, i am moving out in 2 weeks and need a flat mate to replace me (am moving to oz) the guys i live with are awesome fun. /end of pimpage.

£900pcm is easily achieveable for a 1 bed/studio in London, even for something nice - but you have to hunt, or be ready to commute a little. If you really want to be walking distance from CW then £900pcm might be a bit tougher though.

I dont mind being at the other side of the river even though I will have to get the awful tube. :(

Although the tube fare would have to be subtracted from my rent.

Any areas I should look at? Or areas to avoid?

Thanks

So you're going to London on a budget but don't want to flat share or use the tube, right :p

The phrase 'broaden horizons' comes to mind :D

(But saying that I wouldn't want to flat share either)

I agree on the flat share - though I'm sharing a house with a certain member of this very forum at the moment, it jsut depends if you know the person or not.

As for taking the tube, I don't blame you, I drive to work as I don't like to commute, but it would probably cost me less, however the sheer convenience of driving outweighs any cost savings for me (i.e. popping to the shops on the way home, or the gym, or whatever).

As I said I think £900 is easily achieveable but maybe look further away from CW itself, and just accept taking the DLR or tube in the morning to get there. I'd rather live somewhere with a bit more life and a bit greener and have to commute than living in a built up area.

I live in Dulwich and work in Battersea - it takes less than 20mins to drive in the morning (I leave home at about 645am), by the time I leave work (between 1700-1800 usually) it only takes me 30mins peak rush hour. Taking the train would take me minimum of 45mins in the morning, which is already almost as much as my trip there and back by car!!

Anyway back on topic, Greenwich is nice, Blackheath is lovely but dear, Woolwich is ok, Deptford's a dump and I can't comment on north of the river as I keep away from the east end of london.

My current commute is over 1hr each way so I suppose as long as it is shorter than that it will be ok.

I guess if I include a 1hr radius that opens up a whole world of possibilities?

Thanks for the help. :)

Living in a shared better house/flat in a better area for the same money > having your own dump

cymatty, in my opinion you're crazy to consider a 1hr commute but not a house share. I share my place with one other and it's only a good thing - cheaper rent, bills in half, we share cooking and cleaning, good company... there simply isn't a downside. Professional shares are nothing like student shares if that's what you’re worried about.

Get in touch with theDude - his set up sounds good.
