AMD Phenom II X4 965 Reviews

I have a feeling that they will release a newer version of the 965 with lower Watts at some point. Which will allow for better overclocks... wishful thinking perhaps.. but you never know. I can't see AMD sitting with their arms crossed and waiting for the i5 bashing.

i5 bashing? What?

no, dont hold your breath......... expect to see:- overclocked 955's all the way up to 4GHz..........by Xmas or shortly after, with slight performance tweaks, so they can achieve this.

there's a world recession, this is not the time to release something major, and they might not have the money to spend on research right now, hence the bulldozer/ fusion wont be out until the economy totally recovers

you cant use the Bulldozer anyway......it requires a totally new MOBO/ Graphics card design.... expect nothing major for the next 2 years

am i dissapointed?...............no i'm pleased..... pc technology is moving too fast, it needs its wings clipping; so that we can all catch up..especially pc game developers................i'm a FEAR fan, and that's still DX 9 as is all my other favourite shooters......... or maybe DX 10 at best.

DX 11 ?..............i see no need for it, pc games aren't reliable enough.........Fallout 3 wont even work properly, it's an unreliable pile of junk!!

get the bloody games working correctly first... no bugs/ no glitches/ no crashes to desktop............... once you can do that right............then think about DX 11/ 12/13..............they're running before they can walk!

technology is moving too fast and right now it's totally unreliable......enough said, but it does annoy me.

i5 will be right there competing with the AMD's Phenom II Quads.
Therefore it would be foolish for them to sit around and wait for it to happen and not do anything about it?

The will lower their prices once again as we have seen, this is due to the fact that intel has the technological edge against them. So another way for them to remain competitive is for them to do simple re-release on current chipsets but with slight modifications to it. i.e. lowering the watts to maybe 125 to give it more headroom for the overclockers.

I highly doubt the i5s will be on par with the Phenom II Quads, especially since some of them are going to be dual cores. They're basically rebranded Core 2s, and the Phenom IIs at the minute blow those away. The 955 and 965 are right behind the i7 anyway, what would be the point in releasing a processor so close to your top of the range that you can't notice a difference?

Blows away core2 quads you must be reading different benchmarks, and core 2 quads are what 2 years old and it only just beats on average a core 2 quad ar 2.83ghz and the phenom runs 500mhz higher.......

I cannot answer for intel. However, intel has pretty much secured the win and is sitting there firmly with their i7 series. This doesn't mean they will be content.

There are other niche markets for them to exploit. I'm sure they know how successful AMD is with their Phenom series, this could be the reason why they decided to drop down one level and to try muscle out AMD in that area as well. Seeing them releasing a range of chip that sits just under their highest range doesn't surprise me one bit.

What surprises me is how good the price for the i7 920 is compared to the next step up of the series.
At a little over £200? I think it is a steal! Coz it makes no sense at all to have the 950-975 priced so much differently.

It looks like I shall be waitin until i5 comes out before I put my money on a Phenom II 955.

And is it annoying anyone else than there is no price difference between 955 and 965 in the US but there is here >_>

I'm inclined to think a 125watt version will be along soon. It happened with the 9950 Phenom I - only the 1st lot were 140w. And the Phenom II 945 125w has been replaced with an otherwise identical 95w version.

henom 9950 (140W) - HD995ZFAJ4BGH

Phenom 9950 (125W) - HD995ZXAJ4BGH

Phenom II 945 (125W) - HDX945FBK4DGI

Phenom II 945 (95W) -- HDX945WFK4DGI

Phenom II 955 (125W) - HDZ955FBK4DGI

I was reading on another forum that the chips usually don't consume this much power anyway but it is just put there as some in the batch made use upto that.

I heard that too. The number on the box has to be gauranteed for any chip you might buy. If 8 out of 10 stay at 125w but 2 of 10 exceed, then the chips will be rated at the next step up, 140w.
That said, the reviews show it using more than the 955, suggesting that the difference in TDP translates to some minor but real power consumtion differences.
PS cheers Final8y for the more specific breakdown.

It makes less sense to price the i7 like that.

How's it less sense?

It makes no sense to have the i7 950 priced twice as much as the 920 when you can get better level of performance for a fraction of the price. You can bump the clock to 4Ghz on air for £200.

It's the same scenario with AMD's 965. A simple stock clock bump does not warrant the extra £60 unless you are loaded and too lazy to learn about overclocking.

intel was the first to shot themselves in the foot and now AMD.
