Hello Everyone, first I will start by giving out my current specs:

E6600 Core2Duo @ 2.4 ghz
ATI 4890 Toxic Vapor 1gb
4 gig Ram
22 inch LG monitor
Asrock ConroeXfire Mobo
650 Corsair PSU

I recently bought a 4890 Toxic and I have found that my CPU is lacking behind in certain games, lets take crysis for example. When i play it you can tell that the CPU is struggling to keep up with the graphics card.

I cannot overclock my CPU because my mobo is so bad, i bought it when i was in college 3 years ago and had no money :P.
Now i think its time tp upgrade but i don’t know what to do, people have told me to wait till atleast windows 7 is out and the new CPUs, some have told me to just get an i7. And if i was going down the i7 route which would be the best 1 ??

Please can you guys give me advice on the best route to take. Bare in mind i have had my current e6600 @ 2.4ghz for 3 years now and only now have i seen it struggle and thats only in crysis everything else is fine. Thanks

Everything struggles in Crysis. I would get a new mobo and get that E6600 clocked. The E6600 is still a very good cpu and most will hit 3.2-3.4Ghz. That Asrock is a terrible board based on a ancient 945p chipset. £68 will get you a good Gigabyte P43 board from here.

Agree with this.

However if you have the money then by all means go to i7. However i5 is only around the corner and supposedly will offer much better value for money. You could always have a look at the AMD route as well if you only use it for gaming.

As for Crysis, yeah, there still isn't anything out there that can run Crysis at absolute max on a big screen at a smooth frame rate. It's basically a poorly coded game and shouldn't be used as a basis imo.

But if I were you, save your money and wait for christmas as all the goodies are coming out then along with Windows 7 :)

Yip, get a new motherboard and clock the cpu, far cheaper and should tide you over till you can save up for a full i7 upgrade at a later date.

thing is ive started a placement year and im getting all this money, and a nice shiney i7 looks lovely. However other than crysis my CPU is fine every other game i play has no problems what so ever. I think ill just wait till windows 7 comes out and see my options then. When are the i5 out ??? Thanks for all the help so far guys

i5 comes out between September and December supposedly. I don't think there is a clear launch date I could be wrong.
