110deg for a 4870 alright?

Hey people, to whoever was following this.... I got a Lian Li PC-P50 and the temps sorted themselves out. When it gets higher than around 65-75 that clicking kicks in though... so deffo going to RMA it now. Happy that I've tested the thing to its extremes!

I have no idea! Not got that far down the thinking process. My main worry as I have said is that oc deem it 'ok'... I was semi-glad to hear the clicking come in halfway through Crysis Warhead session as it proved that it wasn't the case etc, it was the card. Will let you know what finally happens.

As I write, Catalyst says 54deg in a decently warm room. In the old case, that would be creeping up and up and chuffing out heat rapidly. This thing has been left on for a good few hours now.

But yeah, go me! So lucky to have won a £100 voucher of my choice thing @ work as the Lian Li is lovely!

u need latest ati drivers anything above 9.5 will do for fan control ..

u need to unlock the funtion aswell ...red padlock nxt to "select GPU"

i have a ATI HD4870x2 an @ 40% on the fan it ides on the desktop @ 47-48 deg ..

in game it goes up to 65+ deg .. but soon drops down when quited ..

so yeah 100+ deg is waaaaaaay to hot m8 .

Nope, 2 wires to fan = no fan control, 3 wires to fan = fan control. This card has 2 wires.

No worries as I say, in the Lian-Li things are much better. 4x the amount of fans, much less wire... air can move again!

This just came in:
£0.00 x 1 - HIS ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - OEM

So new card (I hope) is on its way to me. Looks like same model... unless I get the one which is covered and not the open heatsink one. First thing I will do is play Crysis for an hour and listen for the clicking!

Right, I have my replacement. I wouldn't say its a new replacement as the 'backplate-y bit' where you plug in your DVI cables is bent. You get the side where you'd fix it into the case with which is at a right angle, thats ok, its the other side which goes towards the mobo... its kind of bent in towards the card (30 degrees or so) where I'm sure it should be flat. Some of the black paint is scuffed off here. Its straight on this:

the right hand side.

Is this worth getting in a miffy about? I mean I didn't do this and when I buy something, I buy it new! This smells of refurb.

Had a similar replacement on one my Ati HIS cards, i just sent it back, if the back plate has ended that way up god knows how much of a beating the rest has taken.

yeah my Sapphire HD 4890 Idles at 65c and when playing Crysis goes up to 80c. I have a Zalman GV1000 VGA cooler but not got round to installing the thing. Too scared i might break the card.

my XFX 1GB 4870 would idle at around 73-75 ... took the XFX cooler off and put the Akasa Vortex cooler on (£11 from this site) and my idle is now sat around 50 (on very low fan speed) ... and it looks so much better. I have it hooked up to my fan controller and can just quickly adjust the fan speed up and get the card down at about 32 on full speed ... crazy stuff

Got told that this can happen and I can either send it back or bend it back into place.

I don't get why people mess around with the fan temps, in the end you are going to burn out your voltage regulators if you are running 30% fan speed at high gpu usage...

Leave it alone and maybe set an adaptive profile, for example mine is.

Fan off - 40c
Fan 30% - 50c
Fan 60% - 65c
Fan 100% - 75c

I use headphones so these profiles keep my pc cool whilst not interrupting my gameplay, and keeps my cards nice and cool when under pressure.

It's about as easy as installing a CPU heatsink!
