Took my 22 yr old Mk2 Golf GTi in to for its MOT yesterday, expecting the worst. Had a call from the garage telling me that it'd failed due to a split CV boot.. and nothing else

£7.14 for the part and a couple of hours free boyfriend labour and I have the car on the road for another year. Dead chuffed :D

Anyway, it got me thinking. What's your cheapest / most expensive MOT failure cost you?

*waits for all the smuggards to come in and say "nothing, mine passed"* :p

I've only ever passed 1 MOT and that was the 200SX last year, god rest her soul :( I didn't know what to do when they rang to tell me as I usually have to start ringing around for parts and buttering up Leon :p

last car i bought was an escort diesel.

it cost me £50 inc a full tank(£50+) of diesel. :D

it was an MOT failure and it was this it failed on:
Rear shoes, rear brake cylinders, handbreake cables, wishbone bttom arms.

i managed to fit a towbar to it courtesy of a mate who had one he was scrapping so i took it off and fitted it to mine.

All in all i think £200 saw me have a brimmed car with a 12 month ticket. :)

sold it for £250 lol.

cheapest: numberplate light bulb went I think, had a spare one, the main pain was how to change it but I figured it out in the end...

most expensive: brake pipes burst on the brake test, needed to be replaced, around £100 iirc...

Need a pair of lower wish bones and a repair to the rear seat locking mechanism.

Trouble is a pair of lower wish bones is £250 just for the part, including the test and labour the total bill came to £400.

Only ever had little things like brake pads before on various things, never spent much on an MOT.

Infact if we take my s-class, i have done 3 mot's on it now with a TOTAL bill of £80 for all three of them :p

Have to say, on the whole, I've not had bad luck with MOTs either - I had one fail on my 1850 for a few odds and ends after 3 years (knackered shock, small rust hole and track rod end) and I did have a hell of a time getting my Sprinted 1500 through an MOT (partly due to the tester though, should have passed it the 2nd time). Rest have been OK though, occasional advisory but nothing major - mainly down to me doing the minor prep beforehand (bulbs, washer jets, fluid, etc...) - the usual things they get pulled up on.
