Will a Corsair HX 850 be enough to power 3 HD4870s?

I also have

1 x IDE HDD (7500RPM)
1 x SATA HDD (7500RPM)
3 x 120mm Fans
1 x 230mm Fan
1 x AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE (Stock 3.0Ghz)
4 x 1Gb Corsair Dominator DDR2 @ 1066Mhz
1 x MSI K9A2 Platinum

and no other PCI devices. So would that PSU be adequate to run all of this safely?

I'm going to say yes, but ask why you want tri crossfire? I was under the impression it showed minimal improvements over dual, and in some cases ran worse. The issue being that it isn't economic to spend hours coding games to take advantage of more than two gpus.

Hard drives, fans and ram use negligible power. Motherboard doesn't use much either, almost all the burden is on the graphics cards and processor

The tri-gpu isn't permanent, i'm just holding one until my friend gets a new PSU, and was just going to try it out and see if I could see a difference. Thanks for the advice.

Sound, that's as good a reason to play with tri crossfire as any I can imagine. Enjoy, and do report back if it does make a difference :)
