boot failure when i disable HT

when i disable hyper threading in my bios it stops the computer from starting up. when i enter the cpu settings in the bios i get a messege saying that the computer failed due to a voltage or overclocking error, two things that i have not touched, at all! do i neeed to change anything else in order to disable ht?

running an i7 920 on gigabyte ud3r.
 
i will not really need it for the next couple of months, and as it causes a lot of heat i would like it off for the time being.

even though, i would like to know why it will not start with it off.

any help with the issue would be great!

not wrong as in wrong motherboard but as in an older one, sorry for the confusion!

really odd thing is that when i disabled HT, the temps of my cpu actually increased by 2 - 3C instead of lowering it considerably which very odd. so after all of this i have now enabled it again.

anyone else experienced this?
 
Not heard of it before, I'm thoroughly confused by the whole thread. Made me think of a question about dual bios though

Yeah, I was going to say that you shouldn't expect much of a temperature change anyway so no point disabling HT. My 3770k temps are pretty much the same or slightly less at 4.5 GHz 1.23v compared to my 3570k which was at 4.5 GHz 1.26v.
 
A good rule of thumb is to never update your bios through windows tools. Normally the boot up flash utility should be used with a beforehand downloaded bios from manufactures website. Though there are exception to that as well (*looks at MSI*)

Its more noticeable with 9XX CPU's. HT on vs off on my 920 makes ~10°C difference. But that is with an OC of 3.8, so perhaps at stock clocks it doesn't count so much.
