Hi guys,

Bit embarrased by this one - built a new system and trying to get Vista installed but it wont recognise the original 32bit OS DVD or my 64bit DVD at all.

Im on a P5Q-Deluxe with Pioneer DVR-216BK SATA DVDRW (no floppy drive installed and have a RAID0 boot drive) and Ive made sure my boot devices have the DVD as 1st priority.

The error message Im getting is CD-ROM Boot Priority counting down from 35 to 0 and then the message 'Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key'. When I eject the drive it then says 'No Medium' so I dont think its a faulty DVDRW...

Im sure its something simple but Im stumped

TIA

Yep, its not seen in the Storage Configuration anymore since thats setup as RAID, but its seen in the boot up and is an option in the boot menu too - its a Pioneer DVR-216BK not 212...

Its connected to the same SATA ports as my HDs (not the SI ones)

Is the sata on AHCI mode? I know some older sata drives don't like it so much.

EDIT: since its a 216 it should be ok

Its on RAID mode - the DVDRW drive is still pretty new I thought so cant see that being an issue...

If its the RAID selection being an issue Im unsure how to fix it without either moving the DVDRW to a different set of SATA ports (though the SI ones dont support ATAPI) or breaking the RAID config of my drives?!? Cant see why it wouldnt work, which is why Im stumped...

On the latest BIOS - 2201 - according to Asus website...

Ive had the drive a while but never used it so I suppose it could be faulty - tray is working and BIOS is recognising when medium is loaded or not...

How are you trying to boot? Is it by pressing something like F8 to bring up a boot list and then choosing the drive, or have you set it to boot from the DVD drive first in the BIOS? If it's the latter it might be similar to my DFI x38 whereby selecting DVD-rom when it's in RAID/AHCI doesn't work, it's called something else. I can't remember what's it's called though, however it still have dvd in the name. Hope that might be useful :p

Not something silly like your SATA cable is bent is it? In the past I've found that the drive may still be recognised but media can't be read.

Ive tried both ways where its the default doot device so letting it boot as normal to that message or I press F8 at boot to get to the boot menu and choose the DVD (it has the Pioneer partial label) but brings up the same message...

Hmm not thought of that, its a bit of a rats nest in there tbh - will also see if I have a spare DVDRW (might have a Samsung SATA somewhere) to see if its that - its all new stuff so 'untested'. Its got to be either of those hopefully - relatively inexpensive replacements thankfully...

Bit late now - will try it tomorrow night...

I had trouble getting Vista installed because of a dodgy disk on my last build. Borrowed a friends disk and that sorted it out. Probably not that but if its an old copy of Vista and not just bought maybe see if any other machine will recognise it?

I dont know anyone with a copy of Vista outside of a Manufacturers version :/

If Ive got a Product Key can I legally download it or something?

Well to be honest I would be surprised if that is your problem but maybe worth checking out. You could always test it by seeing if the disk can be read in someone else pc although be careful not to format their drive.

An no I don't think that there is a legal way of downloading it. MS might send you a replacement for a few £ if it is faulty.

Just doing that now - can be read in Windows and doing a quick CDCheck before I try and boot with it...

Thanks for the help so far guys - its like my BIOS isnt recognising its a bootable DVD which is wierd - I tried a Win XP CD (havent used for ages, but know it works last time I used it) and that gave the same error, putting it down to a bad SATA cable or SATA drive...

Tempted to copy the DVD contents onto an USB dongle and do it that way - I presume its as easy as that?

OK just scanned both DVDs and no issues on them and both booted up on a laptop when I told it to use the DVDROM. The 64bit DVD errored out as its a 32bit CPU but it still worked.

So its definitely not the install media but the drive/cable - anything else I may have missed?

Give that man a prize. It was the bent SATA cable as I straightened it then reinserted it into my drive and now I'm in the middle of installing Vista! First time that's happened to me so won't forget - hope Vistas actually half good...

Thanks again all
