My friend has just bought a Civic SE Executive 2002 with 50k for £4100 (just passed test and 21).

I recommended a 1.6 Focus for £2000-£3000 but he had a mind of his own.

Am I right in thinking he has paid a lot for what he has?
(Autotrader says so but just want your views)

I got an 04, 53 plate 1.6 S Vtec with 31k on the clock in absolutely showroom condition for £4400 from a dealer, 12 months tax and 12 months warranty and a full service.

Round here it's the kind of thing that a 65 year old Indian Gentleman would drive to pick his grandson up from School. I wouldn't be seen dead in one.

But you would be seen in your fiesta? Aren't both fairly entry level spec models of their respective ranges?

Now usually I'm all for people being entitled to their opinion no matter what they drive. You dont need to have a Ferrari to pass comment on a Lambo.

But to claim you wouldnt be seen dead in a 2002 Honda Civic when you drive a 1997 Ford Fiesta is rather bizarre, especially when the Civic is a dull yet anonymous modern car and the Fiesta is, to all intents and purposes, a banger.

I'd not be seen dead in the Fiesta but although I'd sooner poke my eye out with a rusty spoon than spend money on one, wouldnt mind being 'seen' in a Civic.

That might be slightly over the market value for the car, however he should get years and years of trouble free driving from it.

The wife has got an 2001 1.4 SE, and we've covered 80k miles in it (it's pushing 100k miles on the clock now) over the last four years and it hasn't missed a beat. Good reliable cars, albeit slightly over priced.

As for the nay-sayers, it may look bland but it's certainly a respectable car to own and drive.

1998 Actually ;)

Ok, maybe I would be seen in one, but I certainly wouldn't pay any money to own one. I'd feel silly owning something that made me look like I was borrowing my Grandad's car for the weekend. My Fiesta on the otherhand is suited to a scruffy yoot like myself, it is in good condition for it's age but it certainly isn't ideal. Given that I paid a few hundred quid for it as opposed to £4100, about £1200 over market value, it eases the pain somewhat

Well yes, I suppose he could have bought a BMW instead..

Nope, I'm not saying that at all, funny isn't it, how its always the people who aren't the BMW owners that jump to say that, almost as if its funny, even though it just makes you look daft.

All I was implying is that he could have chosen a less bland, more exciting, and less overpriced car for his budget, plenty of stuff out there for that amount of cash!
