Best Free m4a - MP3 Convertor

it's not really a good idea to convert from one lossy format to another. the information that has been lost during the original encode won't suddenly come back just because you're choosing a higher bitrate. :p

if you absolutely must re-encode (say you have a hardware player that can't play m4a) then foobar can do it (you'll need to download the lame mp3 encoder separately). also, many people around these parts recommend dbpoweramp but i think you have to pay for that.

I'd just typed out something that was almost word-for-word the same as the above reply, so I'll just add that if you find foobar2000 a bit complex to set up, iTunes is another option.

I'm not sure from your post if you actually want to transcode from WMA or m4a(AAC), but you could also check out MediaCoder which will handle a variety of formats.

I was just wanting to convert it before adding to Itunes, but as Itunes does it I may as well let it. I presume it lowers the quality a bit more though?

Yes, in theory at least, although the loss may or may not be audible in practice.

Out of interest, why do you want to convert to MP3 when iTunes plays .m4a files natively?

Foobar is stupidly easy to setup as a convertor... you add your m4as to it, select them, right click > convert, select the directory where LAME.exe sits...and you are away...
