Hi folks,

Got myself a new Coolermaster CM-690 case and am looking at making it as silent yet cool as possible. I am looking at swopping the 120mm fans out for 140mm ones where possible and am wondering which fans are going to be my best options? I am likely going to be installing a fan controller very soon to.

Thanks

Yate Loon D14SL-12 is reasonably quiet or you could get the D14SM-12 if your going to be using a fan controller. There are also 140mm fans by Akasa, Sharkoon, Scythe and Xigmatek but I've not used them, so I can't say how quiet they are.

Clear bling bling plastics are more prone to resonances than normal plastics so as rule it's better to avoid them if acoustics is important.

140mm bling bling Akasas I've tested are ****, horrible bearing and when airflow noises should start to dominate pure ringing noise becomes noticeable hinting to resonances.
140mm Sharkoon System fan and Yate Loon I have are both acoustically moatly similar. Quite nice and smooth in general except there's slight noises from bearing/motor whose noise isn't as smooth as in 120mm SlipStream. (whose airflow probably isn't much behind 140mm fans)

As overall from fans I've listened Scythes have been the most consistent and all at least good so I would try Kaze Marus whose design seems similar to SlipStream.

The Xigmatek 140mm XLF-F1453 are really good fans and they look stunning ;)
On the opposite, looks acoustically bad.
And blade geometry might be rather bad at generating pressure. (similarities to weak Noctua S12?)

Yeah I've got 3 of them on my front door and although they do look good (white led on orange transparent blade mmmmmmm) they do not perform as well as they look -- the airflow is just mediocre. I am looking to replace these as two of them started to make weird "resonating" noises from the motor.

Too bad there are no decent 140mm fans yet though... Looks like I have to wait a little more...

Lots seem to prefer the Yate Loons but I've heard although they are acoustically somewhat acceptable, airflow wise they really aren't.

If there's enough room, a Scythe Kaze Maru is a 140mm fan with 120mm fittings that'll fit most non-restrictive 120mm fan ports. And it's quiet.
