What are the essential foodgroups?

As I learned it as a child, and very easy to remember:

Meat
Fruits & Vegetables
Breads & Cereals
Milk

It doesn't get much simpler than that. You can place any food into one of those 4 categories.


edit: looks like they added a new one: Fats, Oils, & Sweets. How dumb.

Back then it didn't fall under a group, however the sugar could have fallen under a cane product which would have been breads and cereals. Sweets were non-standard, as were fats. They added them since I was a kid, though.

Should the last one be dairy....
Technically, but Milk was an easier way to remember it. It flowed. Remember, dairy comes from animal milk.

What on earth? :confused:

They are:

Starch
Fruit/veg
Meat, fish, eggs and beans.
Milk and dairy foods.
Foods containing fat and sugar.
 
Proteins
Complex Carbs
Essential Fatty Acids
Mono and polyunsaturated fats
Vitamins & minerals.

But as for actual food groups:

Vegetables (inc root vegetables and pulses)
Fruit
Red & White Meats inc Poultry (inc Eggs)
Fish
Dairy products (milk, butter etc...)
Starchy products (wholewheat pasta, rice, potatoes etc...)
