No - some countries which happen to be Muslim use the excuse of Islam to justify what they wanted to do anyway. As I said, take a look at Indonesia, with the largest population of Muslims on Earth IIRC. Don't see a lot of this going on there do you? Because unlike a lot of Middle East countries they don't have a tribal tradition of oppressing women.

How many times do we have to say this: it's a tribal thing, not a religious thing. Again: take a look at the Muslim regime that ran Afghanistan before the Russians came - women had as many rights as they do over here. Muslim country then, Muslim country now. What has changed is the tribal balance of power, with the more of the repressive tribes in power and the more liberal ones banished.
