Hello guys.

I freely admit my knowledge of cars is very limited if at all. I currently own an FTO, I love it to bits. Its not the fastest car in the world but to me it has all the power i need and handles superbly.

I have always had a soft spot for the Accord Type R, now to me this seems like a logical replacement (you may think completely the opposite).

It handles well, has enough power, its relatively rare (round here anyway), its not too expensive to run etc and it has 4 doors.

Would you agree as such or would you recommend an alternative. Although i have to admit, i do like my jap cars. I have always had Hondas, Nissan or Mitsubishi.

Hope this isnt to daft to you guys but the help would be appreciated. Im just looking for a 4 door version of what i have really for around £3000 :(

These are great cars, and despite the interior being much thinner and less sound proofed they are surprising nice and pleasant at motorway speeds, a friend at work has one and I love it, they can be thirsty when pushed though. Pirate black is the best colour imo.

Yeah very true. I know there is a lot of Vtec bashing on here, but to me its not a problem. Although this could be impossible to answer and i should test drive one, do you think they would handle similar ?.

[[[EDIT]]]

Yeah the Accord in black looks superb, better than bloody silver.

Ah yes the Galant, i do like the look of them and would be sorely tempted but wouldn't it be more expensive to run as it 2.5 V6 Twin Turbo ???

You can find them with the 2.0 V6, but they are quite rare in the UK.

edit: And also twin turbo, so they would cost more. But more power, so can't be all bad.

Is yours a MIVEC? The 6A12?

The Accord Type R has a H22A7 engine, which is a ~220bhp version of the 2.2 found in the Preludes. So, it's got that nice little "kick" at ~5200rpm, and you'll need to rev it high to extract the most power - just like the FTO.

Or, there's the Galant. The 2.5 V6 is ~170bhp, and N/A. Engine is the 6A13. Not as quick as the FTO, though.

Or, there's the 2.5 V6 Twin-Turbo - the 6A13TT - quad cam, 4 wheel drive, 260/280bhp monster! ;)

Running costs of a Galant VR-4 will NOT be cheap - expect between 15 and 25 mpg. Regular servicing required, too! (Every 4.5k miles!) Club VR4 for more information! ;)

Personally - I think they ATR will be great for you - similar power delivery to your FTO, but in a more practical 4-door saloon bodyshell :)

Yeah i agree. I think you and Fox have summed it up perfectly. The next things to do then is take one for a test drive and see how i get on with it. Im waiting for the garage to ring me as they are sourcing me one (from somewhere)

The Galant does not have the same engine as the FTO does it? It's totally different?

Ive just been reading up and you are indeed correct:) Are you ever wrong:p

Thinking about it, do the japs do any other 4 door performance cars in that kind of budget, the primera is too old, Mazda have only recently started doing the MPS in the '6', I cant think of a hot Toyota either.

How about a Nice Mondeo ST, nice V6 lump and plenty of cheap bits for when it goes wrong.

Subaru Impreza
Subaru Legacy
Mitsubishi Galant
Mitsubishi Lancer
Nissan Stagea*
Honda Accord

* I have no idea how much these currently go for, I just recognise the name as being a 4 door performance saloon

Oh yeah, forgot about the Scoobs, the only Galant I would spend 3k on, is the VR4.As a layman I dont know enough about the other Galants.

There's a guy on PreludeUK selling his ATR for £2500...

It's got 144k on the clock, but believe me, that's absolutely nothing for a looked-after H22A engine - mine had 178k on the clock before my accident, and it was still purring like a kitten!

What about the rest of the car, though? Isn't it getting a bit rattly and creaky given its probably what, 10+ years old as well?

Quite possibly - but what 10 year old Honda isn't going to be a little bit rattly/creaky ;) Coming from an FTO he probably won't notice much! ;)

I can't say I know the car or even recommend it - I'm simply browsing there as well tonight and saw that he'd bumped up his FS thread with a price drop to £2500!

Either an Accord or the Galant, same engine as the FTO, someone here has recently bought one IIRC.

Haha that's funny because my Dad used to have an Accord Type R and the next car he got was a Galant V6. :D

I have to say that the Accord was a great car to be a passenger in at least if you like that kind of driving ;), shame I never got to drive it as the insurance on one of those things when I was 17 would have been astronomical.

Very nice once it gets to about 6000 RPM :p

As stated by others the atr is a good choice.

Vtec does get a bit of a bashing on here but most people accept they are perfectly good engines. It's people with 1.4 jazz's who constant go ' so I was racing this Ferrari enzo and well... When I hit 6000 rpm it was game over for him !' who cause the issue.

I think there are some best motoring videos on the atr. Check YouTube

The ATR is a great car sign up to accordr.org and readup - wealth of info.

Power is 209BHP and 158lbft.
0-60 6.1 (as tested by EVO Mag but parkers says ~7 secs)
No difference between Pre and Post models in terms of performance.
Post cars ECU mapped to handle 95 RON fuel.
Pre cars have front and rear lips and better looking IMO.

I owned 2 and found them a very capable car and very stable at high speed on track. But what I found was that as it is the 2.2 engine is has more torque and therefore I used VTEC less during day to day driving except when joining the motorway or on a spirited drive.

The recaros are sublime and the cabin is a very nce place to be. There are a few problems with them including:

5th gear syncro
Auto tensioner
EGR valve
Electric aerial (pre models only)
Head gasket on higher miles

Overall a great handling car and economy wise you can get 32mpg if you drive like a granny but mixed driving will get you sub 30mpg. I think the running costs of the ATR are less than the Galant V6 but both cars are good so as you say test drive them both and pick what floats your boat.
