Dyslexia

She is currently on a course to get her onto university. Should the college be doing things to help her?

She needs to get in touch with her College and find out what help they can give her. If she was at University she would need to get in touch with the Disability and Dyslexia service on there campus.

I would be a bit suprised if they were unable to offer any help, I can only speak from my previous job.

I do know that some Colleges help students with Dyslexia since a colleague use to provide support in her last job which was at one of the Colleges in Cardiff.

Best for her to talk with her parents and have them all go down with her to the College and speak to someone about it.

Im dyslexic and at university at Edinburgh studying chemistry. I never really knew i was dyslexic until just after Christmas this year as my school or high school never picked it up, but i had a flat mate this year who was dyslexic and he tough i was so i went in for a test at the disability office (every collage uni should have one.) I got diagnosed with dyslexia and now get extra time in exams (which is awesome 15minutes +25% of exam time), lecturers have to give me lecture notes before a lecture, i allowed to get a tutor for free to help me with essays and my dissertation. and best of all i got £2880 of the government to buy a laptop, printer and some software. I also get stickers to put on my essays so i cant get down marked for spelling and grammar.

So tell her to go to her disability office and get a test. it will take about 2 months but its well worth it.

if her uni/collage doesnt have a disability office then im afraid its a lot more complicated and expensive. you have to go get yourself tested(not sure where) and it costs £200 for the test.

How would she apply for the £2880 from the government. Would this be done through the colege/Uni

Her parents are wasters and dont care. Thanks for all the advice though. I dont think her college has a Disability and Dyslexia service.
I assume she would have to actually be a student in the Uni to use their service.

If we're assuming it exists I do wonder how many of the people diagnosed with this 'condition' actually have it vs people who just happen to be say good with numbers but useless at spelling.

If u cant spell and are good at maths you are probably dyslexic i. Anyway the test for dyslexia is a bit more rigorous than just a spelling test :P. if you pass/fail computer test (depends on how u look at it) you get booked in to see an educational phycologist who you have a 1on1 meeting with for about 1.5hours, where she puts you tough lots of tests. One of the main problems for dyslexics isnt spelling anyway its reading and short term memory. dyslexics short term memory is very poor so we forget things easily... like what we have just read or peoples names and since dyslexis have a hard time reading they concentrate on the reading hard and use up most of there brain power on the reading so they dont actually take in the information there reading (this is the thing i find most anoying)

£2880 ?? Holy mother of god, what kind of gear could you possibly buy with that cash to help with dyslexia? I can understand the extra time in the exam and getting notes from the teacher but that is madness. Laptop £350, Printer £100, software....?

Holy carp, you could get a shiny new watercooled system for that

The funding varies with each person. And what you spend it on will have to go through the DDS to be checked/agreed upon.

There are some people who use there disability to try and take advantage.

Exactly, if someone had sent in a request with a quote for a ultra powerful laptop for thousands, they would be asked why they need this particular model and not one that costs far less.

Could be buying the entire Adobe suite :p

It's all in your friends head.

To assist her with the difficulties she is having, at least 2 real books should be read a week. Very little TV, No facebook or twitter etc, No texting. She will soon master the English language.

Tests will only make her feal a victim of a incurable condition which itself is under dispute of actually existing or not.

The way it was done for me was when i was diagnosed i got a furter interview at the uni's disability office. They then then show u a lot of stuff and ask you if you think it would help you (say yes to everything) and at the end they work out how much all the equipment costs and make you a list. they then send the list off to SAAS (in scotland anyway) along with your report for the educational psychologist's, and you have to wait for saas to aprove it (which they always will) saas then send you a check for the amount of money to buy all the equipment. along with the recomended place to buy it all from . You are alowed to buy the stuff from anywhere you want but you must provide receipts for all the stuff and you are alowed to buy any laptop you want so long as u spend at least £1250 on it. So natuarally i didnt get the 2ghz core 2 with inbuild graphics they were sujesting lol. I got the titan apollo from OC with the T9900 processor which im still waiting on!!!!!!! >:(

dyslexia is reall.

the debate is over how dyslexia is described. You only have the tail end of a story :P.

and also dyslexia ISNT just about the english language. it effefects memory.

i asure you a dyslexic person no matter how much they read will never get up to par with there english skills.
