I had the MOT done today on my sisters car that I will be using. The tax has expired so currently no tax at all on the car.

I was wondering if I am allowed to drive the car to the Post office to get some road tax, in the same way I was allowed to drive to the MOT?

Can't find anything about it other than the allowance to drive to/from a pre-booked MOT.

Cheers.

No, you are not.

Either buy it online (and wait about 5 days for it to be delivered), or get a lift to the post office and have it immediately.

No. Walk or get a lift. Buying it online will mean you have to wait for the disc in the post.

i would just do it, chances of getting court are practically nill if you know the area and pick the right time.

Yeah, just drive as fast as possible, ignore speed limits - you will get there quicker ;)

i've ordered online, then driven before its arrived. Technically illegal, but you'd need to stopped, and done for not displaying, when odds are you're more likely to get done electronically (ANPR), which you'd be covered for.

remember if the lights are timed for 30 they are timed for 60 too (although i have never seen timed lights in the UK, it really is a great idea)

The chances of getting caught are so small its not worth worrying about IMO!

Police dont pull you over unless you speed or draw attention to yourself doing something stupid.

With no tax... insurance?

I'm insured if that is what you mean.

I know there is a very slim chance of getting caught, but i'm not sure I would take the risk.

I was just hoping if I got pulled for not displaying, the officer may let me off if I had my insurance doc/ mot cert/ log book with me.

no, i lasted about 3 weeks with no tax till i got court, luvkly i was on my way to my mot ( that was 3 months out) he called up the test station and sent me on my way. he could have booked me for no tax, but it would have to be a sod of a copper to in that circumstance

Not any more, the DVLA brought in a 5-day "grace" period a couple of years ago for tax purchased online.

Not really no. Lack of a VED disc doesn't really give an insurance company a valid reason to withdraw cover.
