Overweight? Depressed? Aged 35? If you can answer 'yes' to all three then you are almost certainly a gamer.

So suggests a joint study conducted by scientists from the US Centres for Disease Control (CDC), Emory University in Atlanta and Andrews University in Michigan. Researchers concluded that frequent gamers tend to be fatter and of less sunny a disposition than non-gamers. Their average age is 35.

The study quizzed 500 adults aged between 19 and 90 from Washington state. Around 45 per cent said they played games often.

Female gamers reported greater levels of depression and a lower quality of health than non-gaming girls. Male gamers generally had a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) values than non-gaming boys.

Both male and female gamers were found to have a higher reliance on the web for social support than non-gamers, the study said.

Dr James B Weaver of the CDC said: “Internet community support and time spent online distinguished adult videogame players from non-players, a finding consistent with prior research pointing to the willingness of adult video-game enthusiasts to sacrifice real-world social activities to play video games." ®

I couldn't really give a damn. I do what makes me happy, whether that includes gaming or not.

People with hobbies that don't involve physical activity being less fit than people who do more active hobbies.

Well I never !

Most gamers who I know that have any sort of depression had it prior to gaming or it can be linked to events outside of gaming. Only know a couple though out of the thousands of folks I've been in guilds/clans with over the years.

meh, I'm a gamer but i'm 21, still play footy every week, am not fat and am generally quite happy.

So boo sucks to their survey :p

Seems a bit of a silly study, although there may be a slight correlation between the two it really doesnt mean one is dependant on the other, which is what the article is completely leaning towards...

to be honest i get bored with games too quickly to get addicted to them. I ver seldom complete any unless they are very good or absorbing.

I know a few people who are overweight and depressed but they’re not gamers. ;) This is obviously from the US. :D
