Which SatNav - Recommend pls

Garmin.
Cheaper than tomtom, just as easy to use, better guarantee ( exchange rather that repair ) which means you dont have to deal with tomtom customer service, which is just terrible.

Look at Garmin 205, 205w ( wide ) or get a T in there for TMC traffic updates. Newer models 1200 series faster screen redraw, speaks road names. For models at that budget.

TomTom.
Might not be the best, but till the easiest to use IMO.

I'd disagree with the easiest to use statement!

I'm no novice with Satnav but TomTom ONEXL (unless they're all remarkably different in UI) was quite tedious to use and find a specific destination for the other day compared to my Garmin 255WT.

It's just that it needed too many clicks and page flips to find nearest POI of certain categories compared to Garmin's primary category and "search near me" feature.

Other than usability they both had the same accurate directions, same quality voice guidance and same level of detail in their respective "map skins" - I only use top down view not 3d view so that's what I am going by :)

NOT GARMIN !!! mine leads me anywhere it feels

What model? you need to state this because SOME older models are quirky....I'm also betting you've not run Garmin Webupdater to update the firmware and settings so accuracy can be improved (updates are released regularly).

I can't fault my TomTom OneXL - works as expected and was cheap from Halfrauds

I also have the Garmin Mobile XT app on my phone and that works great too but I prefer the TomTom

Tomtom one XL's are 99 quid now, by far the best portable for the money.

If you have a smartphone you could install tomtom on that too.

I dont use portables much now, but have always found tomtom's to be leagues ahead of anything else.

Garmin recently had an update problem IIRC that bricked any device that updated itself. While that's not to say don't buy one, and it could happen to any manufacturer, the fact is it happened to them, and what's more they don't provide the end-user with the functionality to do a hard reset (or some such similar thing) which would've solved the problem, meaning everyone had to send their SatNav back to Garmin for them to sort out.

My 2p :p

It didn't affect all models though clearly else I'd be complaining to the hills.

I can't remember the specifics and can't be bothered to look it up, it's quite possible it didn't affect all models - equally it's possible you didn't use it for a couple of days around the time the update was released, and by the time you used it and it updated itself, they'd fixed the update. :)

Garmin works great for me, have a nuvi250. Got me everywhere over 6000km in South Africa as well as plenty of visits to the Mainland.

Has Channel Islands maps too, TomTom does not.

If you had bothered to check you would have found it only affected one model, the nuvi 765
