Hi all

Just finalised it and its not working, any help appriciated

coolermaster CM690 case
OCZ ModXtreme 780W PSU (tested voltages on all rails, fine, also tried my 480W out of this PC and still same)
Inno 3D 8800 GT (pulled out of this machine, so its working)
i7 940 (bought from members market)
Gigabyte EX58-UD4P (bought from ebay, says RMA on box)
6Gb of Corsair Dominators (1600MHz) (bought from ebay)

i have plugged in the two power connecters to the motherboard and 1 to the graphics card

when i turn it on, all fans go (no speaker on case, so no beebs, tried headphones, nothing) and nothing comes up on the screen, the screen stays yellow and doesent go green

Well with all that 2nd hand gear... The best option is to start a process of elimination. Try with each stick of RAM in turn as a start.

Got any friends with an i7 system? If so you could test your CPU in their working board and their working CPU in your board, should tell you which is the offending party - same with the RAM, ask to borrow one working stick for testing purposes.

If don't have any i7 friends then I guess a computer shop is your best bet. It may cost you some cash, but i'm pretty sure RMAs are not possible with your kit.

One second thoughts, are you 100% sure everything is connected right? If you post a picture of the main system we could verify everything is in order before you start spending money trying to get it fixed.

What stepping is your CPU? If its the newer D0 stepping the your motherboard may need a BIOS update to recognise it. The symptoms you describe woud happen if this was the problem.

The i7 940 is only available in c0/c1 stepping, so recognising the chip shouldn't be a problem.

Ah ok ;)

Next thing id be trying then is clearing the CMOS, then trying the RAM a stick at a time. Id also contact the seller of the mobo to double check they havent sent you the wrong board by mistake.

thanks for all your help guys, ive just got in from work so not had time to check anything, i will check 1 stick of ram in each slot, the ebay ad for the motherboard doesent state that it works or not, he only says "used" and the ad is just the motherboard's description.

@ cmndr_andi

yeah good idea about the pic, i will do one, thanks :)

i just get the feeling that its a dead mobo, im tempted to get another mobo from the OcUK clearance section what do think?

pics of i7 build pics below

ignore the untideness, when i built it up for the first time, it was really neat, but it wasent working so i stripped it out and rebuit direct

no graphics card in there when i took the pics, its in this computer , but will update when i get a min spare to do it

Sounds like a duff motherboard to me. I had an ASUS board do the same thing and it was confirmed to be faulty. The fact it had RMA on it would be a clear indication something isn't right with it.

My money is also on the board, but would have thought gigabyte would send a working one back as an rma. Contact the seller then decide whether to claim against him based on that, I think it's fairly likely he sold you a knackered board. If not he should be happy to refund you and take the board back.

Gigabyte might let you rma the board to them since its not been in existence for long enough for the warranty to have run out as a different option

After having a good look over those photos and the motherboard manual, it looks like everything is connected correctly (except for the noctua fan being on the wrong side, but this will have no bearing on your current problem).

As the others have said, the most likely answer is a dead motherboard - but it is by no means the only possibility. If possible, follow my advice from post #3 when you get a chance. If one of the RAM, mobo or CPU are found to be faulty, what recourse do you have to get it replaced/refunded?

Have you tried taking out your memory and turning it on because then you should get a continuous beep.
