Hey guys,

I have had a 280gtx ocx card from bfg for about a year now, and just had a replacement for the second time. (this time I knew to contact Jeff who kindly arranged for me to be able to pop by their depot and get a replacement there and then).

While i was there, the guy asked if i used SLI as he was going to upgrade the card to a 285gtx. I didnt so thought this was great :)

I didnt really get a chance to look at the card, but when i got back to work I opened the packaging to find its a 285gtx oc (Not an ocx).. So onto my questions

I dont have a clue what the difference is between the 280 and the 285, so is going to an oc from an ocx card a reasonable swap? (currently waiting for a response via email from Jeff about this one).

Upon further inspection, the top of the card (that is the part that faces up when its in the mobo) is very different to my 280 version which had a plate thing on top matching the rest of the card - looked really nice! This card doesnt have that, yet there are two screw holes visible on the end of the card (One that would be near the hard drives) which have no screws in them, yet I can clearly see that there were screws in there at one point by the different colour ring of metal surrounding the holes.

The other things are more minor but would appreciate some comments. Firstly the rubber cap that goes over the sli bridge is not there, and secondly there is minor scuffing and some scratches on the plastic which are not (and would never be) present on anything I own) and finally it smells a bit funky, like its been in a smokers house maybe..

Comments? Thoughts? Would love to hear from someone with the card as to whether the top plate thing is present etc..

Thanks

quick edit: Nothing quick about these questions I guess! Sorry :)

From what I can see the GTX 285 OC should match the specs of the GTX 280 OCX in almost every way (and should be better).

The rubber cap on the SLI connectors does not come with the GTX 285 due to the lack of the backplate (which was intentional by Nvidia's design), and looks kind of strange if it is on there without that plate.

In regards to the shape of the card, they should all be new and not refurbished as far as I am aware of. Not exactly sure what you are smelling  And sometimes the cards to get scratched in transit and whatnot, there really isn't a whole lot we can do about that. Many times, they show up here like that. Maybe just weak plastic, not sure though.

Have you had a chance to install the card and play around with it? If so please let me know what you think of it.

This man is some kind of customer service legend with response times you know :)

Cheers Jeff, I just got your reply by email too. I havent had a chance to play yet as i have the misfortune to be working till around 9 tonight so wont be till then.

Odd how they decided to do away with the backplates they looked really nice..

Anyhow ill have a go tonight and let you know..

Im a total neat freak regarding my gadgets (and I included components) so I just didnt like the idea of it being scruffy! Would painting it invalidate my warranty? :)

It's doubtful that it would void your warranty, but it would be hard for us to get it repaired or replaced from the manufacturer should we need to (without replacing the heatsink entirely) not to mention that the RMA department might give you some grief should you need to return it again. Not sure how well paint would hold or look on that plastic shroud either. As much as I hate to say it (I know it will drive you nuts) I probably have to advise against that :)

Just out of curiosity, what type of paint were you referring to? Just painting some black paint over the scratches?

Haha I can imagine the fuss it would make with the RMA folks..

I have a number of paints for modeling which would have coated it well, I just dont know how well it would have covered up the scrapes :) Maybe when i replace the card I'll have a go

My 9800GX2 RMA replacement was scratched and had the stickers peeling off, but it worked and I suppose that's the main thing. :)
