Any tips for giving up smoking ? ( I am climbing the walls )

Cold Turkey,

None of the gum of pastilles or w/e just give it up.
Get something to pass your time, a game you enjoy, TV show or something.
Just need somethign to distract you if it gets too hard.
My downfall was drink, coupla pints and I'd be after a smoke.
So what I did was drink at home, when I felt like a smoke I'd stop drinking, strange way to do it but it worked. Can now go out and have a full night out without even the temptation of a smoke.

Been smoke free just over a17month now :)
 
Cold turkey and will power was my way, oh and an addiction to crisps, it got much better after the first week. That was the giving up not the newly found addiction to crisps. :)
 
i have gone cold turkey from 15 - 20 a day... my stats are:

Given up for: Two weeks, three days, 1 hour, 46 minutes and 46 seconds. 256 cigarettes not smoked, saving £80.03. Life saved: 21 hours, 20 minutes.



i tried champix but kept forgetting to take them and then taking the full dose made me feel rotten. i thought they had been withdrawn as people were topping themselves!

good luck with it, for me cold turkey is the only way...!
 
Cold turkey and will power

I had been smoking 20-40 a day for 15 years then, 1 day i had real bad chest pains at work i was that bad i got taken to hospital being overweight and a smoker with chest pains the doc had a look at me within 5 min. After an hour or so of tests the doc came back with your overweight and have bad intesgestion/hearburn...is that it i said? he replyed take it as warning as next time it will be for real. That kind of stuck in my head and the scare of not seeing my son grow up really hit me hard...i booked a race day after a week or so in my Skyline and took a 20 pack of smokes had the best day ever..never touched a smoke after that day...4 years next march clean :D all will power and the fact I WANTED to give up...hope you do well mate:)

ps yes im still a fat git but im working on it ;)
 
keep going mate, I gave up on 10 jul 09 - first time that it was physically dificult to give up - dont want to go through that weekend again so hopefully that will stop me starting again! Even after a few weeks I get the cravings but they are controllable and I do feel better for giving up (plus the missus doesnt look at me like I'm killing myself anymore!)

Gave up smoking on 31st Jan 09. nicotine withdrawel was the killer for me as it made my head spin like I had the flu. One month on quickly degrading patches was enough for me, when I felt like I needed a ciggie I did situps or pressups and that actually worked for me.

Benefits now are more money, less stinky and lil Blast is a lot more eager!! ;)
 
The Alan Carr book didn't really work for me but when I did decide to quit almost 2 years after reading it, I took one piece of advice with me.

"People who quit while on patches or pills quit in spite of them, not because of them."

So, last January I quit cold turkey and has been said, the first week is the hardest and after that it gets considerably easier. You'll still want one at times but it's not constantly at the forefront of your mind like it is now. Just stick with it and do not give up.

And also, if you stray (I did a couple times), don't use it as an excuse to give up your attempt. Stick with it.

7 months on and it may only pop into my mind once a week but it's only for a second and quickly forgotten.


Oh, also, another thing that helped me, I just kept telling myself that it was a temporary thing. If, after 6 months, I still wanted to be a smoker, I could go and buy a pack. This solved all the mind tricks I was telling myself (such as, "why would you quit something you enjoy".). It really helped shut the voice in my head up and after 6 months, I didn't buy a pack.
 
Electronic Cigarette.

40 a day to 10 a day the first day. Plus many flavours. It's awesome.

I did that in feb after smoking for about 17 years, I just mix the stuff with glycerine and buy extra flavour, started out on 36mg now I still get the same strength but mix it 10-1 with glycerine so im nearly to nothing now in the nicotine content, addiction slowly broken, it was hard at first though not picking up a normal cig, now I cant stand the smell, and when my kids first said to me daddy you dont smell awfull anymore thaty did it for me, and all the colds ive had since I never get a cough, when I smoked I got awfull coughs.
 
Ask one of your best friends to deck you in each time he catches you smoking. That's what I did (though admittadly not quite on purpose...) and it worked a charm.
 
Just don't eat too many polos, what i did, i ended up eating like 5 packs in a really stressful day. To be fair, you don't really want a fag while the whole world is evacuating your backside but it aint too fun.

If at home, try having an ice cold shower, i find i've come back to my senses and don't want a smoke after one. And you'll be a very clean person.
 
One of my friends bought a new pack and selotaped it totally shut - with a load of layers, until it was ridiculous. Then he carried it with him so that he had his cigarettes and every time he wanted one took it out and realised how much effort he'd have to go to to actually get one, and how desperate he was to be doing something so stupid to pick off all the tape to get into the pack that he managed to stop - I think that he's still got the taped up packet somewhere.

It's a bit of a hassle but going well for me at the moment. There's nothing better than vaping on my 510 in a club and having everyone be WUUUUUUUUUUUHT?
