On the road....
The road Tax is up at the end of the month on both my 328i and my Girlfriends Mondeo, we bought both cars from the same dealer albeit a few weeks apart.

Looking through my docs the other night, I coulld not find my V5 and after speaking to the GF it appears she has not recieved hers either!

The dealer does not want to know (well, he is not returning my calls!) so I'm guessing I'll have to fill in whatever form at the Post Office to get my V5, and my GF hers?

Is this is still the case? - I've done it in the past with no problem but am wondering if the rules have changed in a "sods law" style..... :o:D

Thanks. :)

Can't you go back to the dealer and tell him to sort it out? I would.

Tax it online.

Would I not need some reference number from the V5 to do this? - Apologies for being thick! :o:D

Not worth the bother tbh, I'd rather do it myself, I have a feeling he'd fob me off and I'd end up with a car with no tax!

Have you not had a reminder either?

Put the reg into the DVLA checker and see when the last owner change was. That will tell you if they sent the paperwork off.

Come to think of it, no I have not (but the GF has for hers even though she has had no V5 either!)

Got a link for that checker thing? :)

Hmm it doesnt seem to show date of last owner change anymore

Glad its not just me then!

Thanks for the help.

Anyway, back to the initial question,. can I still fill in some blurb at the Post office to sort it out?

Not much point in me doing it on-line as I don't get paid until the 28th and that does not give me much time for the Royal Fail to get the disc to me.

You get a 7 day period now for just this reason.

To be clear, as long as the car has been taxed, I can still legaly use it on the public highway even though I won't be displaying a valid tax disc which is the actual offence iirc ??

Yes - you must continue to display the old tax disc.

If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.

The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.

Great!

That saves the dreaded Post Office Queue then!

Thanks very much for the help, much appreciated. :)

Edit:

Jut had a play about on the website re taxing it and it appears that I must have the V5....
Please check that you can answer 'Yes' to all of the questions below.

If you cannot, then you should not use this service at this time.

I am the registered keeper of the vehicle. I have the V5C Registration Certificate (Log Book) and the address on it is correct. Yes / No

Bugger! Post office after all it seems.....

Do you still have the small part of the old V5 that you should have been given when you bought the car? If you haven't got your new V5 through yet then this should be sufficient for taxing your car.

Whilst I recall getting it when I bought the car, I can't find it any more.

I'll be taxing my car under my name for the first time in the next day or two.

Will I have to go to a local office (not too far away tbh) or can I do it online?

A couple of people have said that I have to go to the licensing office first.

I taxed my car with this but at DVLA - Post office wouldnt let me.

Local DVLA office will help tax - i had no V5, hadnt changed the address of R/O (i moved) and i had to print off 2 forms and then sort it at the DVLA. They even forgot to charge me the £25 admin fee so that was great !
