Hiya guys,

Have got a Nikon D40 with the stock 18-55mm lens at the moment and have been enjoying myself going out and about using it. Nothing is particularly wrong with it and i'm enjoying the learning curve and feel photography is something I will continue to take an interest in and enjoy.

I am at the point of looking for new lenses and have had a thread on here before asking about a good telephoto which i am yet to purchase. However, as i am at this stage I have pondered about moving over to Canon, from what i have seen on this forum it seems like a popular choice and have a lot of lenses to cover everything (not that Nikon are particularly short!)

Having a quick look at some online stores I have seen some deals and have seen an Canon EOS 1000D 18-55mm + 55-250mm IS Twin Lens Kit for £545. Looking at the specs this seems like a bit of a step up from my current D40.

A few reasons why i am thinking about the move:

1. Selling my current kit + the price of a new lens for it will nearly cover whe cost of that camera which will come with what i was looking for + a little bump in spec
2. I have yet to "fully" commit to one brand with a range of lenses bought for it
3. Canon appear to have a bigger 2nd hand market going for them (judging by the MM on here at least)

I know for a long time to come I will not be spending 1000's on new bodies and lenses so the 2nd hand market is where i will primarily look for new kit and would like the body to last me a long time yet, i'm nowhere near the limitations of my current kit (far from!) but wouldn't like to commit to getting lenses for it then finding maybe a switch early on might be better

Yours thoughts appreciated :)

Also looking at the D3000 now, which seems pretty comparable...

This will be tough to choose if i do go for a better body :(

I'm baffled as to why you are looking to swap from one entry level body to another. Totally pointless move imo. You'd be surprised how capable your D40 is with a decent lens on it.

Ive had both cameras, its only my opinion so is obviously subjective.

Canon+
I prefer the feel, operation, lens choice and overall sharpness and smooth colours of the Canon.

Nikon+
However, I do prefer the punchy, straight out of camera colours from the Nikons.

Im a Canon man myself. Ive had several of each before (D40, D40X, D80, 400D, 450D, 1000D) and always go for Canon now.

As you can see, Im a camera whore, probably getting more buzz from owning the latest models than actually enjoying the photos I take. The most pleasure Ive had with any camera was my 450D and 85mm 1.8. I took that combo to Ibiza last year and shot some fantastic portraits. They are razor sharp and almost look 3D thanks to the shallow DOF. The reason I say this, is that as versatile as the combo you mentioned is, I'd much prefer prime lenes, its suprising what you can do with a 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 - it makes you more creative...

Why did you buy a 1000D if you already owned a 400D and 450D?

Because I tend to sell the bodies, to fund better lenses, so then tried out the lower-budget bodies. I must say, I didnt miss many functions by doing so, the amount of autofocus points was the main loss, but as I use primes I generally shoot with a fixed central autofocus anyway.

I thought i covered that in my original post..

In my eyes i was looking to buy a longer lens around the £250 mark, if i sell my camera with stock lens for circa £200 then the £100 difference for an increase in spec will be worth it in my opinion?

G4ORCE - thanks for your opinion on this, its appreciated :)

I will be looking towards over lenses etc further on but seeing as i only had a D40 with stock lens I thought now would be the time to think about switching rather than down the road :)

Hehe cheers, If i do it probably won't be for a month at least, maybe two depending on funds and sorting rest of my PC out :)
