Most Common Names - Census surprise

Why is this surprising, not like 17th is even that high.. and mohammed being the most common name globally it doesn't seem surprising at all?
 
I think Mohammed has been quite high up the list for a good few years now hasn't it?

Having said that, I don't know anyone with that name :)
 
Mohammed is the most common name in the world.

What's surprising is some of the randomly high ones like Callum and Ethan. Only two I even know are Callum Best and Ethan Hunt (as played by Tom Cruise).
 
It is worth remembering that that is for babies, not all names :)

Hence whenever there is a popular film, TV series, pop star, celeb's babies name, or new (soon to be Z list) celeb it tends to be reflected in the names of the babies ;)

Mohammed and the differences in spellings are probably 17th in part be because it's popular amongst a particular religion, and partly because there are so many other names that are more "traditional" British names (I don't think COE members tend to pick from a particulary small selection of names for example).
