If the weather is half decent this weekend, then I'm planning on heading out Dragonfly hunting. Going to a place near me that is apparantly THE place for dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies and insects in general in the North East. So... Im taking the heavy artillery;

:D

We've just got them in here at work, so I'm planning on taking it for a spin before anyone else get their dirty mits on it. For those who don't know, It's a Hasselblad H3D-II 31MP digital medium format camera, with a 120mm f4 macro lens.

And I thought the Sigma 150mm f2.8 was a weighty macro lens. This thing is a monster! It's closer in size and weight to my 300mm f2.8  Hopefully shots of the kit and resulting photos to follow by the end of the weekend. :)

ooooo, intresting stuff, cant wait for the pics, if only i lived closer to you, would love to have tagged along.

It looks impressive, but what difference does MF make to Macro photography in the real world?

I'm thinking that you are going to have to get even closer than usual to fill the sensor.

Does it have a big advantage for macro that I'm overlooking? Or is it just cool :-)

if you can post a full res image!

Will try to. Not sure what size it will be though. I think the camera produces something like 50Mb RAW files, lol.

Nods like a dog with a big bone. :D Yeah, logically, it is probably not ideal for macro due to having to get closer to fill the frame, the weight etc etc. But Im taking it for two reasons; To get used to the kit. Eventually I'll need to teach the lecturers, so they can teach the students, so I need to learn all the ins and outs before they come back. And secondly; 31MP files! I know, I know, the resolution race has got out of hand. But when you see a huge res file printed out, it's something else. Ideally id like to get a really nice, clean shot of an insect, then print it out on the 44" printer, and stick it on my office wall as an example of resolution and what the camera can do.

My friend has one and uses it for landscapes, pretty impressive piece of kit, I hope you haven't bought it lol, as I know how much these things cost!

The company he works for did IIRC, lucky so and so. I'll have to add you to MSN MK to get some full res shots from you :D

Hehe, nope it's work's. Lets hope I don't grow too attached to it.

Its gonna slash down in the NE this weekend..no dragon hunting for you my boy!..mad bit of kit though.

"Dry for much of Saturday with sunny spells but cloud and rain may arrive later." I can live with that. Get out nice and early and hopefully get the insects while they are still cool. :)

Woah, you've gotta post a link to a full res image from that.

Those things are like £17k

Sure will do. This one was a bargain at about £10k+£2k for the lens. Not much more than a Holga really. :p

I found a dead Dragonfly next to the pond earlier, its an emperor and it huge. Its also beautiful, real shame - no idea how it died.
Its wings/body are all in perfect condition.
