Can anyone suggest a movie to watch? I liked Mirrors and Bloody Valentine, what is Silent Hill like?

Silent Hill is okay assuming your not a fan of the game and ignore the random sections with Sean Bean, but for me was not all together "scary".

Then again if you found Valentine and Mirrors scary you may well do.

Ever watched any Japanese horror?

Watch the original Grudge and The Audition if you have no love for your under pants.

I liked both the original Japanese and the USA remake of The Ring, really gripping and well thought out storyboard, and that is one scary little girl, gives me the creeps!

Agreed, I just thought it might help him choose something to watch as I was too busy to write out a list for him, lazy bum that I am :P

The Others is quite a creepy movie
All the Japanese ones that people have mentioned are quite good although sometimes it feels that JapHorror overuses the scary kid routine.
If you like slashers then you can't go wrong with the original Halloween (the rob zombie Halloween isn't too shabby either) or the original Friday 13th :P
Personally I love zombie movies so anything by Romero is a winner (night, dawn, day of the dead) I shamefully enjoyed the remake of dawn of the dead too and I hope they remake them all!!!! There, I said it!
Some of the old classics are worth watching too, stuff like Rosemary's baby and The Omen (not the remake! oh gods not the remake!).

I watch a lot of B movie horror too and there are some gems to be found but you should probably stay mainstream for now :P

Calvaire (The Ordeal)

Watched it last night. Not so much of a scary film, but it will **** you up as you sit there trying to work out what the hell.... just what the hell :D

Ring (Jap version) and Battle Royale, just pure class

You are having a laugh aren't you? Not in the least bit scary. Event Horizon is a good dark movie but not scary. For sick and twisted without being overly gory or just plain slasher material, I recommend Man Bites Dog (some good funny bits too).

ugh.

Fear is Subjective, just because things arn't scary or me and you doesn't mean they won't be to others.

The Thing
The Grudge (US)
The Amityville Horror (2005)
Dark Water (Japanese version) -I've not seen the US, but the trailer made it look like a good remake
The House on Haunted Hill (1999) -buy the double box set with the original too, it's a fun watch :)

All very different films,
The Thing is based the South Pole (I think), basically a remote area, a lot of tention in this film, very well made.

The Grudge is often ignored because it's an american remake, but this is the best cinema experience I've ever had, I actually wanted the film to end because my heart couldn't take the suspense

Amityville horror gets a bad rap because it's not true to the stories, original or books, but it's a decent horror flick imo. Ryan Reynolds is awesome in this film

Dark Water is a similar style film to the grudge, the hairs on my legs/back are tingling just thinking about it :o

House on Haunted Hill, is a very american style film, as far as horror films go, it's not amazing, but I've got a soft spot for it, it's one of those films that would be really amazing in 3D, but it's worth a watch

Event Horizon is worth a watch, but it didn't really freak me out much, a bit jumpy/tense in places
