I was on the phone to O2 Tech support earlier as I have changed my O2 mobile number.

While I was on the phone I asked him if he could turn Interleaving off.

He asked if I wanted more speed up or down, I said lower latency is more important as I have 20mb cable for downloads.

For some reason he decided I should have more upload, he said he has put me on Annex M and turned interleaving off.

I was quite surprised they would do both of these things.

I'll see what it's like when I get home.

My connection was about 11.5mb down and 1.3mb up.

I also thought Annex M was only recommended if you were quite close to the exchange with 16mb+.

Hmm, my ping is no lower, my download has dropped and I have gained 0.1 upload I think.

Stats:
DSL Type: G.992.5 Annex M US 56
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,434 / 10,101
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 25.5 / 45.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 2.5 / 3.5

That was a waste of time asking lol

As I said I didn't ask for Annex M.

Just called them and got them to put Annex A back on, she said that Annex M is only for the Pro package which I'm not on and the guy shouldn't have put it on for me.

She also said the only switch interleaving off if there is a problem which 2nd line diagnose as something that could be helped by turning interleaving off. Anyone know a way to get them to do this?

Stats now:
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,377 / 11,074
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 25.0 / 43.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 3.5 / 3.5

is your SNR the normal for O2? Mines at 6.5 and I just saw BT installing a new line for me this morning. Wondering if I will get faster speeds with a lower SNR?

I didn't say you did, just that what you're seeing is exactly why Annex M should be reserved for "shorter lines" which is exactly what you asked.

That sounds like Clueless Phone Droid Syndrome. Switching off error correction to fix a problem? Er, righto...
The only reason to disable interleaving is the latency aspect (and they could always turn down the interleave depth).

is your SNR the normal for O2?

It's not the default.

Wondering if I will get faster speeds with a lower SNR?

Of course. You might also get an unstable connection though.

so how do you go about asking for the interleaving depth to be turned down as all they ever say is well all we can do is adjust the SNR only... but 2nd line is good when it comes to sorting out line issues & call backs

I tried again last night, spoke to 2nd line. He told me only third line can turn interleaving down and they will only do it as a test.

Why are they so against turning it down or off?

It was quite funny actually, the guy got me to do a speed test using speedtest.net, my ping was over 500 on there lol, then he told me to ping google.com, that was 109ms, the american server surely? Pings to BBC are 18ms, not bad but if I could get my game server pings down into the 20's I would be happy.

o2 dont turn off interleave, I have tried many times on the phone to put me on fastpath.

I'm on O2 with a SNR of 2.5-4.5 (depending on time of day) and I've not dropped a connection yet, it improved my connection from ~3.5 to 5.2Mbps

18ms pings and you're whinging? :p
Try being on 40+ to your first hop...

Are you sure you have interleaving on? depends on the depth but typically you'd see 33ms pings to first hop with default depth.
