I'm sure you guys are tired of seeing these types of threads so sorry in advance!

I've spent the better half of this evening searching through this forum regarding first cars and insurance to go with it. I've gathered that I should avoid hatches and the like and opt for a saloon car of somesort that isn't typically associated with the young driver. After a bit of digging I'm thinking of going for a Nissan Primera :)

At 22 I have one years driving experience as a named driver on my dad's car but unfortunately no claims bonus. Naturally I'm sure insurance quotes will be £1k+, and after shopping around the cheapest quote I could muster up was about £1300. With the car costing about £400 that puts the total to £1700 ish.

Does that sound reasonable as a first car? I'm open to suggestions too (although no Mondeos please, I know they're quite popular here - quotes came up more expensive than the Primera unfortunately). Thanks in advance.

Yeah. Go for it. So long as it's in good condition it'll be fine. Be prepared for people asking you how old you are? It's quite an 'old persons car' unless it's the 2L GT model.

Good choice IMHO, it's a much better car than your typical tiny first car, and £1300 for insurance isn't too diastrous really. Primeras are supposed to be one of the better 'drivers' cars in their segment too.

I'd rather drive an "old person's car" (well, I do!) if it means comfier, quicker and with more kit than a Punto or a Fiesta or what-have-you

Where have you been getting your insurance quotes? It shouldn't be £1300 for a, what i assume, a 1.6 Primera. Unless you live in downtown Baghdad, of course.

No 1300 sounds absolutely fine for someone with no NCB - adding parents or other named drivers may help lower it a tad

:\

I have a GT and i can easily get quotes for around £700 at 21 with 0 NCB.

The only reason i can think of for your comparitively high quote is that you live on a battlefield, or you've only been doing quotes on one website.
