I have a Cheverlet Karlos 1.2 SE 55 reg at the moment and am thinking about swapping it.
i will be commuting 30 miles a day so want something that will be cheep to run and maybe with nice cheep road tax. The karlos is group 3 insurance which is costing me about £370 a year so if i could get this down as well that would be good.

i do occasionally go on the A1/M1 though i think most cars these days are ok at 70 mph.

Been thinking of a fiat panda toyota agu (sp) or yaris

What do you guys think?

Keep the Kalos. You clearly have zero interest in cars and its just a tool, which is fine. The Kalos is a crap car but it's not SO bad that it justifies replacing it with something like a Panda. Group 3 insurance is already so cheap that changing your car to reduce a £370 insurance quote is bordering on ridiculous.

You will spend much more replacing the car than you could ever hope to save.

1 the word is cheap.
2 is this a troll?
3 If this is not a troll then what are your insurance details (what No Claims Bonus, age, claims history)?
4 You are only doing 8000 miles a year to work and back (and thats based on 5 days a week for 52 weeks) - is this sufficient to change your car for?
5 If you change your car and spend money doing so then you will have wiped out any saving you make on insurance. The same goes for getting a car with cheaper road tax or higher Miles Per Gallon rating.

Cheers,
You are right im not that interested in cars as long as it works and i can get to where i want then thats fine.
Just didnt know if the running costs of the Karlos could be reduced but if they sound ok then i wont change, as id have to spend money to swap.

The running costs of your Kaolos are as low as one could reasonably expect. You wont see a significant reduction by changing the car.

Insurance Groups range from 1-20. I pay just under £500 to insure a Group 17 car, so from this you can see how insigificant moving from Group 3 to Group 2 would be.

1 Yes
2 No
3 6 years no claims, 27 , and no claims been made. no points or endorsments either.
4/5. I dont know, just thinking of ways to try to save money.
Was only thinking about it as it looks like a ~£200 job to sort out the seased bearing on the AC.

27 and 6 years no claims and you pay £370 to insure a Group 3 car?!

I have a third of your no claims and I'm younger and it only costs me £120 more for Group 17

Ok, i'm not sure how much cheaper you want it to be to run a car?

You pay around £400 a year to keep your car on the road + petrol, which won't be anything in a 1.2. It's not going to get much cheaper than that.

law of diminshing returns. The insurance can only get so cheap.

especially where postcode is concerned. If his postcode is dodgy, most of that £320 will be the risk of theft

The best way to save money would be to shop around for your car insurance! Unless you live in Kabul you should be paying about 1/2 of that.

I am 27, 3 years no claims (1 claim, 4 points), group 17 (I think) car and I pay about £300 per year.

Exactly, Sounds about right to me, they need a fixed cost to cover admin plus your base risk of crashing that year regardless of how slow the car is.

How on earth can you be paying that much on insurance?

I'm 24, 5 years NCB and driving a group 9 car which is only costing £295 ish

Changing your car to save 200 quid is daft as you wont be able to make any real savings in fuel, tax or insurance

Had licence for 10 years to all of which i had been driving as a named driver on parents insurance.
Dont think the area is that bad not like im in a big city or crime area

OK and sorry for being suspicious, being online brings out both the best and the worst in me.

I have to agree with everyone else.

You have good claims history with a small car already. Buying a cheap car to replace yours won't save you a lot of money unless you are downgrading from a newish car to an old car. If you bought the cheap, older car then it comes with unknown issues which may be a lot more than £200. Your car with a known £200 bill and nothing else wrong with it is far superior to a similar car with the potential of higher bills.

For location: its not only scummy areas that are high risk but the nice areas near the scummy ones, because that is where the local car thieves go to work.

what postcode is it

Im in sleep old wakefield, which according to the postcode ratings is the 2nd worst you can get !

we only need the first bit, eg WF1 to calculate your insurance risk.
