Need a new car after mine blew up

While the Saab was a very nice car I'd like something rear wheel drive, one of my only complaints about the car.

Yet it was a Vauxhall. So if you were otherwise very happy with it why would you not be happy with a Vauxhall? Is it purely a badge thing for you?

I'm not suggesting a Vauxhall, after all, most of the things they make are beyond terrible, but if you managed to own a Saab 9-5 and didn't notice it was a deeply flawed car I suspect you'd get on pretty well with many of the cars you are scorning. And thats the point really - dismiss cars because you dont like the way they drive not because you don't like the name or because your Dad once fixed a broken Ford in 1979.

I personally did not buy an ST220 either, despite the fact it was on paper ideal for me. But that was after I experienced it for myself and not becuase FORD LOL or anything else.

I'm not going to even bother argueing with you over how different a Saab is from the GM chassis it started from.

This is recommend a car thread, I said I like the look of BMW I thought they were quite popular here too? Was I wrong?

£5k plus your SAAB will get you a really nice one.

A lot nicer than an e60 imo and one hell of a lot of car for the money.

They are popular, but not for 5k.

30 years ago Fords were pretty crap. 30 years ago a BMW was a genuinely exclusive car that relatively few people could afford. Today the 3 series outsells the Mondeo. Things move on.

was about to post similar.

think he needs to get with the times and realise fords arn't what they used to be...

yes, only goons who are anal over interior textures like them.

:p

You won't want a BMW, they are more unreliable than Fords and will cost you more to keep going. I'd tell you all about the various model ranges but I'm not allowed in this thread ;)

To be honest your budget isn't going to buy you a nice car within the criteria you want. Listen to the recommendations and consider them for a moment as they're more or less the only interesting cars you can buy within your budget.

skoda VRS? although i would have suggested the ST220 first as i've just bought one.....very comfy, loads of toys and the v6 is very smooth. I get 30mpg as an average and although it's not massively quick, it's got a decent amount of power to keep you smiling. The noise is lovely though.

Notice where I said I could get a loan, borrowing £10k wouldn't be an issue.

I have a fairly good job with not too many outgoings.

I can't help but laugh. In many other threads users shoot you down in flames for mentioning (or supposaidly mentioning) BMW's yet when a car which perfectly fits the bill is suggested....you get the same thing.

Six years ago maybe. E38's are utterly dirt cheap at the moment and getting cheaper. So much so that I have had to step back and re-evaluate the universe. You could have a good mid nineties 740i from around 2k now and a 728 from as little as fifteen hundred.

I don't get why though? I think people like Fox are now afraid to even suggest a BMW because of the abuse that people give, just because he happens to be one of the millions of BMW owners out there.

Absolutely mate, but for the OP's budget, he could have one of the last of the line 2001 models (and watch its value drop like a stone!) :)

From what I've seen he's happy to reccomend a BMW where its the best option, there's a few recent threads that prove that - I'm sure he hasnt reccomended one here because the budget is too low to buy a decent one

so how come we have 2 pages of recommendations that dont meet the criteria here?

what about something like a Skoda Octavia VRS ? good handling, good spec, good performance? Passat 1.8/2.0 turbo?

lets face it, the focus is a great new car.. but give it 5 years, they squeek, they bump they rattle, they have a tendancy to throw wheel bearings, leak on the inside footwells.. about 3-4 o my friends drive a focus...ALL of them want to get rid, and none of them want to replace them with another focus (unless its the 2.5 turbo), so that tells me something.

other options

Leon 2.0TFSI - although maybe a bit pricey i have seen some new shape ones at my local seat garage for under 10k

er.. new shape Civic 2.2 CDTI job k so its only 140bhp but im sure it could be shipped to be much higher?

I'll only recommend a BMW when the OP specifically asks about them or when somebody else suggests them. Anything more is just too much hassle on this forum :)

So its a spec you a car from £5-15k thread.

How about you work out how much you have to spend THEN ask us whats in that budget.

Frankly if you are loaded just... fix the Saab? You like it and its only a grand to fix it. If you want to chop cars every time it throws a £1k bill at you then forget BMW's.
