Need a new car after mine blew up

The "Fords always break down" stigma is ancient history.

I drove my Focus for 5 years like I stole it and nothing ever went wrong with it (Other than a little rattle in the center box).

The interior was not STUNNING but it fat together well, I did not have rattles and the only one squeak was from a seat rail that took 30 seconds to grease.

As far as reliability and acceptable quality went the Focus is pretty damn good.

The 1.6 and 1.8 Petrol variants go well enough and the handling provides a bit of a laugh if you are that way inclined.

Frankly I find the build versus Ford v Toyota to be largely 6 of one half dozen of the other. Neither are what you could call well built cars. There is no disputing that Toyota have mechanical reliability absolutely nailed but inside the cabin? Nasty plastics and poor quality bits of trim everywhere. Mk1 Focus is, I agree, probably poorer in this regard than the Corolla but the Mk2 isn't THAT bad, i'd say its probably slightly better.

Well whatever, even with those figures you're still out but frankly it doesn't matter as he's buying neither a T Sport Corolla nor a 530i so cares not about the relative performance of either.

Because irrational prejudice annoys me. If I said a spec me a luxurious 300bhp saloon thread and then said ARHGHG NO MERCZ i would expect people to think I am a tard and receommend me an S430 anyway, as it's the best choice. Then I could think hmmm, I am being a **** and look at one or still think ARGHGH NO in which case the post could be ignored.

It is, isn't it. Although now my secret is out it seems it was all a waste of money. I'd trade it for a Corolla T-Sport but I dont think it would be fast enough.

hm i see the 530i as being what a 7.1 0-60 motor and 15.5 on the 1/4? corolla does the quarter in 15 dead with a good driver high 14's...

but forget ford vs toyota, note that i never recomended a toyota in this thread, i recomended VAG, or Jap, which is what the OP asked for.

some people really do still feel that Fix Or Repair Daily or whatever it is, is an inferior product.

Autocar road test figures are 6.7 and standing quarter in 15.5 but sadly they were recorded at Millbrook on a wet day so I'm not sure what they'd be in the dry. Interestingly using the same timing gear and drivers when they did the Corolla they couldnt get more than 8.4 seconds. Perhaps it was broken, although it was the revised 04 model, maybe its loads heavier? Not interested in random figures from forums, if I was I'd quote the turkeys on BMW forums who think they can get 60 in 6.0 seconds and a quarter in 14 out of a 530i, they are deluded.

I don't even know why we are discussing this, though, but never mind :)

More fool them, then.

so how come we have 2 pages of recommendations that dont meet the criteria here?

what about something like a Skoda Octavia VRS ? good handling, good spec, good performance? Passat 1.8/2.0 turbo?

lets face it, the focus is a great new car.. but give it 5 years, they squeek, they bump they rattle, they have a tendancy to throw wheel bearings, leak on the inside footwells.. about 3-4 o my friends drive a focus...ALL of them want to get rid, and none of them want to replace them with another focus (unless its the 2.5 turbo), so that tells me something.

Funny that, the first recommendation hit the nail on the head!

Focus we have is now verging on 8 years old, not one squeak or rattle, it doesn't leak (because the pollen filter box was sealed properly) and hasn't thrown a wheel bearing, mainly because the car isn't bumped up curbs and is driven with care.

other options

Leon 2.0TFSI - although maybe a bit pricey i have seen some new shape ones at my local seat garage for under 10k

er.. new shape Civic 2.2 CDTI job k so its only 140bhp but im sure it could be shipped to be much higher?

How much higher? I doubt he'll get anywhere near what the Saab has.

Anyway this thread is pointless. Fix the Saab and think longer about what you want and how much you want to spend. At the moment this is a stupid knee jerk reaction to something that could happen to any car.

Oh the irony. :D

How so? Seriously I don't care if a Ford are the most reliable best built cars on the road I don't like the look of them, so why would I waste my time looking into them?

I would Consider

Audi
VW
BMW
Mitsubishi
Toyota/Lexus
Honda

My ideal car would be

Rear or 4wd
0-60 Under 7 seconds
Quiet and comfortable
Average 25mpg +

I'd prefer a nice sounding engine (the saab wasn't great)

Handling isn't that important, as long as it's safe. I have a track car to tear around on track days and my myself deaf in.

Obviously sometimes you have to compromise which I would for something I like the look of.

And what is your budget? Your absolute budget? What amount of money are you willing to spend?

Octavia VRS?

I'm confused about your requirements.

You say you dont care about handling but it must be RWD or AWD and that you dont want a Ford because of the way they look but you dont say you want an attractive car?

TBH after reading through all of this positioning and banter, I'd save your money and stuff getting a loan until you find a car you really want that you don't have to get input from a forum on.

Get a beater to get you from A to B if you've got a track car to get your kicks. A nice Fiesta should do you. (runs). :D

So thats the 3rd time in the space of this thread that the budget has changed.

Rapidly incoming CBA approaching this thread :/

Sit down, work out how much you actually have, go and buy Autotrader, thumb through it, pick a car you like the look of and buy it.

Because nobody in this thread can do anything right by you.

Was just thinking about that. If you look at the exponential budget growth and take into account the time to decide, find and purchase a car, you can reach spec something based on the requirements and budget come purchase time.

I've come up with this:

I stated in the opening post I have £5k and a loan isnt a problem, did you think I meant a loan for 50p? I stated later in the thread that loaning £10k isnt a problem.

Really wishing I hadn't asked now after the replies.

Well the budget was £5k then it was £15k cos he could get a loan now its £10k.

Next week: A 'my new car' thread featuring a 1999 Golf Diesel bought for £2500.
