US engine sizes are just insane!

So what you are saying is that as the US gradually switches over to "premium" 95 RON, their engines are getting more efficient?

TBH anything large with a badge will probably have a "large" engine, think of all the S-class/7-Series/Continentals/Range Rovers/XJ's etc etc you see every single day, a lot of them will have large 8/12cyl engines in them.

True enough, but in this country iirc, BMW's biggest sellers in the 7 Series range was the 728i in e38 form and 730d in the e65.

Whilst large engines are available, in reality, you don't need them.

My Canadian cousin half explained it, they have to release a car with a 100,000 mile warranty that'll work in both somewhere like alaska or whatever where it's bitterly cold AND places like texas. If it's got to work in those extremes and survive only on fluid changes then it makes more sense to build lazier engines, with lower compression ratios and whatnot hence the need for a larger displacement.

No idea how true that is.

Reasons why most of Detroit went out of business???

They stopped building the stuff they were good at (station wagons, true muscle cars, full-size sedans with suspension made out of marshmallow) and started trying to beat the Japanese and European imports at their own game. Some of the cars are pretty good. A few are class-leading. A lot are complete and utter dross. Much like their rivals around the world in that respect, but because we're talking about American manufacturers everyone feels entitled to point and laugh.
