920 D0 @ 4ghz, how hot is too hot?

Hi Guys,

Im running my 920 D0 @ 4.0 Ghz at the moment.

I've checked the temps with speedfan and core temp, but they both say different things....

i've primed the cpu for 20 mins, and the results are:

speedfan max core temp 85c
coretemp max core temp 100c

the speed fan one sounds ok, but the coretemp sounds really hot. I need to lap the heatsync, as it seems to have a a lump in the middle and doesnt sit correctly.

Also when i cancelled the torture test, like instantly the temps dropped to 35c on speed fan wintin like 2 seconds they were all normal ...

is that usual?

Many thanks

Diak

That's too hot, you don't really want to go above 90C. What are you using to cool it? Always trust coretemp over the garbage that is known as speedfan :p

Speedfan is wrong - it has big problems reading i7 temps.

And this is way to hot. What CPU cooler do you have and what thermal paste did you use?

What is your vCore?

That's quite a lot of vcore for a D0, does it really need that much?

What case do you have, how's the general airflow?

I have a lianli x2000 case and the airflow is nice :) i jhave a 120mm delta on the heatsync
dunno if thats too mcuh. I forgot to check the temps before overclocking.

ill defauly it and check temps.

Any suggerstions as to how to get rid of the dome shape on my heatsync? it seems as only 1/4 the heatsync is in contact with the cps :S

Send it back if that's the case.

Also, make sure you're using 191 BCLK with the turbo mode on (x21 multi), i could drop my vcore by a lot compared to 20x200. Mine is currently 4Ghz with 1.2625 volts or something, doesn't go above 80.

Yea but ive already sanded down the base trying to getg rid of tjhe mound, so i dont think they would take it back :(

just wondering how the hell to get the mound level, if worse comes to wors ill jjust buy another one. might tcy a band sander :D

ok just priming it now, on stock at the cpu (according to core temp) is at 78c

even that seems toasty for stock :S

Tis a little hot.

Either bad chip or bad cooler. The dome shape you mentioned is no good so thats got to go back. Looking at the reviews - a faulty base on this cooler is common.

Of course first try reseating it.

The only other alternative is possibly faulty temp sensors on the mobo but its unlikely.

If your running a Delta on the heatsink and getting those temps at stock vcore, then the heatsink ISN'T mounted correctly. You should be easily be able to keep it under 60C with a Delta going full whack :)

Ok so update in the sit rep.

i took a dremil to the heatsync ^^ and destroeyed the dome of lose.

on stock with delta on lowest speed 100% cpu on all cores. highest core 52c with the lowest at 52

even if i turn up the delta to max, it makes no diff, so im not sure if thats the heatsync not sitting correctly again?

Idle temps are 30 degrees

also i did the line down the middle artic technique, but as the heatsync is really fiddley to get it its probably ended more as a smudge :S is it worth taking it off again and useing a credit card?

Is this coretemp?

If this is correct they are awesome temps. 52degrees load is amazing for a stock 920 nevermind 4ghz.

Mad points to you for taking a dremel to the ihs

i sorta lost my temper with the dome, and saw the dremil outta the corner of my eye... thought ... ah screw it if it all goes wrong ill buy another ^^

looks like it turned out ok :)

ok so runnin 4ghz now, 200x20 1.3v

100% load 77c - 79/80/81c (seems undecisive as which to be)

This is on core temp as well with delta at lowest speed.

Are these temps ok?

fantastic, was thinking about redoing the compound, but i think it takes a while for it to set, and the temps should drop some when it does :P

still not sure if the line down the middle or the card method is the best?
