You might be able to change the date of the flight depending on your airline and if they have space on the next flight - I was ill at the airport one time and Continental were great, told me to come back when I was better. Which was handy as it turned out I had no form of insurance whatsoever for that trip...

Unless consequential loss cover was purchased, the sender can only claim the cost of the postage nothing more if its delayed.
