why is Al Megrahi hailed as a hero in libya ?

Neither was Milošević, do you also think he was innocent too?

Did the world know who he was and what he did? yes, however the guy the Libyan government decided to send to us we didn't know, no one did and we couldn't get to know him as a condition of his extradition was, we weren't allowed to interview him, and be we, I mean the police conducting the investigation. So they gave us two guys and said they did it, you can have them, but only if you tell us you'll find them guilty afterwards and never look for anyone else.

I agree that they may not have personally assembled or planted the bomb, but I do reckon that they definately had some sort of support role in whatever transpired.

Libya didn't come into the equation until America needed to make friends with the governments of the original and most feasible suspects (Iran with Syrian and Palistinan help).

They still needed a conviction to please the public, one which was obtained from the evidence of an asylum-seeking Libyian informant who was considered unreliable at best by his CIA handlers.

because you brought a rather irrelevent fact that fox owns a BMW into the thread for a start, why?

Well mainly because of these types of threada, where people with no knowledge enter, and claim knowledge without having any. When I see a post on "spec me a tractor", do you know what, I don't post in it, because I know nothing about tractors. I feel some members post pretending to have an air of knowledge on a subject they know nothing about bar reading a wiki page.

You've expressed no knowledge whatsoever of this subject so far in this thread, just a random attack on Fox.

True, but you don't think that the Iranians or Syrians would be using people who could easily be traced back to them do you? Even if it was Iran, in revenge for Flight 655, they wouldn't use a member of their own security services that if found out most probably would have lead to some rather nasty occurrences around the Gulf.

Let's not forget, around that time you already had Iranian gunboats taking potshots at US military warships patrolling the Straits of Hormuz.

You reckon Iran and Syria are friends with the US now? You're also overlooking the fact that Libya paid almost $3bn in compensation for Lockerbie - no doubt you've got some conspiracy theory about that too?

For the precise reason I think he has no knowledge on the subject, if Fox posts in here with a certificate showing he has a masters in international relations then I will retract fully my comments and apologise. In fact I will purchase Mr Fox a beer.

We're not talking about now. International friendships change to suit the current climate (we all used to love a certain ex-Iraqi dictator).

And Lybia paid the compensation to get some serious UN sanctions lifted. They admit that themselves.

Carry on.

I must have missed the years when US and Iran were the best of friends.

They also admit that their agents were responsible for Lockerbie. Go figure.

So why are you posting in this thread then?

Reading sensationalist newspapers isn't knowing a subject...;)

For which the US retaliated by 'accidently' shooting down the Iranian airliner that has been mentioned already in this thread.

And no I don't think the Iranians would be using people who could easily be traced back to them. It's claimed they used a Palistinian group based in Syria to do the dirty deed.

Remember Syria was considered to be a safe-haven for terrorists until the West need Syrian help during the first Gulf War, right about the same time as Lybia became suspects.

They weren't the best of friends. But they did share a common enemy at the start of the '90's, right about the same time that the Libyans became suspects.

And I've already said why Libya were happy to claim responsibility - to get the UN sanctions lifted.
