MPs can not afford to cover their costs, says Margaret Beckett

The former minister, who claimed a total of £106,000 for second home costs while living for free in grace-and-favour ministerial residences, also pointed out that those assigned the apartments are forced to pay their own utility bills and face tax penalties.

How do you rack up 100k of utility bills?

Mrs Beckett, who claimed £72,537 in allowances for her constituency cottage while having no mortgage or rent to pay, said that MPs were left out of pocket by a political career.

ah seem s the cotage was her second home.

They're so used to living in the lap of luxury at the tax payers expense that budgeting and going without is simply not an option.

I say sack em all. Gettin away with poop like this and there are a lot of hardworking people out there who have to scrimp and save. Really annoys me.

During its investigation the Telegraph disclosed that Mrs Beckett attempted to claim almost £11,000 for hanging baskets, flower pots and gardening work at her cottage in Derby.

Well at least they turned that down.

Mrs Beckett also told Sir Christopher that he should not block MPs from employing their relatives. The MP, 66, employs her 82-year-old husband, Leo, as an assistant.

Can an 82 year old man be an effective assistant?

if they dont like it then they should quit and get a normal job. see how they cope with that

for some reason i dont think theres a shortage of people wanting to be MPs

Rather him than me :(

Woo, bandwagon.

I currently book employees into cheap rate hotels on behalf of a company. A single night at the Hilton on canary wharf costs £160 - corporate rate. I'd bet you would be livid if your job demanded that ~£400-500 of your wages a week (£15k a year a least) went of necessary accommodation, regardless of a £50,000+ salary.

The system does need changing and is in the process of doing so, but can MPs be reasonably expected to pay all of their expenses on their salary? Absolutely not.

Do the absolutely have to live in somewhere like the Hilton, or an equally lavish hotel? No of course they don't, but they do because they can.
