2k Budget advice please!

Wait a minute.

I've just had a brain wave! (or mental abberation)

Get an Alfa 147 2.0! :D

You can easily pick these up for less than £2k, they're a lot more interesting to look at and less tatty than a Focus, and although they're expensive to maintain, depreciate like a brick, if you can find a rare one with FSH and all the necessary bits replaced, it could be a good deal.

Parkers:
1.3 16V VVT-i Petrol 0-60 Top Speed BHP
1.3 16v VVT-i SR 3d 11.7 s 109 mph 86 bhp

Think you're confusing the one in the link, with the current shape 1.8 VVT-i version.
If you get the milage Parkers quote that's a fairly shifty 1.3.

Woman... Ford Ka and be done with it? :D

Cars cheaper than £2k are usually hit or miss. I got mine for £700, it's done 24k miles in 18 months without problem (except the exhaust fell off and it needed new discs/pads/tyres/wheels, but that only totalled £600). My mate at work got an R plate 106 1.5 diesel for £65. It's a tank but it gets from A to B.

MG ZRs seem to be in favour with the ladies. Saw a girl stall one in a queue on the dual carriageway the other day... Beside the point. I'm not sure how much they are now, my mate has a 51 plate that's never broken down on him yet.

Also, Skoda Fabias. Avoid the 00-01 models but anything newer is decent, but avoid the 1.9 SDI. "Slowwwww Diesel Injection" basically (although supposedly very very reliable).

I have just bought a Golf myself... all the common issues have been rectified, new bushes, engine mounts, window regulators, rear wash wipe pipe etc loads of stuff and plenty of money spent. 1.8 20 valve turbo, remapped and a few other bits owned by an enthusiast in the RAF and I paid 2200. You can get a good car, takes AGES when it comes to Golfs with good spec on a budget but patience is a virtue :)

my goodness, we went to look at cars yesterday and for the money we are talking Im inclinded to tell her to get a moped!

We went to one place where they had obviously hired David Bailey to take photos of the cars. On arrival, there wasn't one that wasn't covered in dings despite the photos making them look resonably decent.

All the others we looked at were just shabby, moon mileage or out of budget. :(

You're silly going to a dealer/trader at this price point. There will either be a profit mark up of probably £500, or you're buying a car that's tattier/higher mileage than what you'd otherwise get for £2k. At this price point, you'd be better trying to buy private or going to an auction and taking a punt - there will be loads of cars available for that sort of money.

This.

I'd personally be inclined to look at the lower end of the market, cars coming in at around a grand if it's just going to be a simple run-around, you'll get far more car for your money. Our family run around is currently a £600 1995 Audi A4. Full service history, all the modcons you'd expect and hasn't missed a beat mechanically.

But seeing how she is something who discounts a car because of the badge, she'll probably say "But they're old..."

well like I say, we can go up to 3k now, 4 at a push as im a sucker and don't want her driving a ming-mobile.

Would this even be worth considering? It's by ikea which we are visiting later today. Id happily give her half and get some weekend fun out of it myself. I give my company car back in the new year and will be buying something nice for us which we will use as a main car and this would be hers for short trips when necessary since we car share to work.
