MPs can not afford to cover their costs, says Margaret Beckett

Do the absolutely have to live in somewhere like the Hilton, or an equally lavish hotel? No of course they don't, but they do because they can.

Hilton hotels are not that lavish.

You can't put people in a B&B or a travel lodge, especially if they need business facilities.

My calculations were based on staying somewhere less expensive than the Hilton, it was used as a reference for showing how expensive accommodation can be. Even then, the Hilton is a fairly standard choice of accommodation for employees from respectable businesses / firms.

I know, why don't MPs just pitch a tent outside the Houses of Commons?

We have to be realistic - you can't expect anybody to work extremely long hours, work away from home, and stay somewhere of a low standard, regardless of occupation. That isn't to say that some expenses claims have not been outrageous, but MPs certainly do need expenses - to say otherwise would be ridiculous.

She's given an apartment in London.

So she can own one home in her constituency and live in this apartment when they are in London when she needs to and I'd be happy for that i'd even be happy if it covered the bills too.

But what i don't agree with and i doubt any company would either is then claiming the house you own is your second home and getting the company to pay for the furnishings in that house.

Do you think your company would agree to this?

Would your company also consider £25 pound a day while there acceptable for food?

They should build a big block of flats, they can live there, the gov will own and run it. security can be provided.

Or should we just continue to pay morgages on houses they are going to flip, and take the profit from ?

My boss doesnt pay my morgage or my food bills. Thats what my wage is for.

The green book was changed in January so that MPs can no longer claim unnecessary expenses. The rules had already been changed before the expenses 'crisis' the media ran with earlier this year even occurred.

Now that you mention it, £25 is my companies food allowance when individuals are staying in hotels and apartments. A hotel room is essentially a bed - you have to give some sort of luxury to balance things out. How fun do you think living in a hotel room without home comforts would be, for a long period of time?

So what exactly is wrong with a tavelodge, they have buisness faciltiies are comfy enough ad have room broadband all for 50-70 a night. That not good enough for an mp?

how if MP only got their salary and anything they spent for their job by their own money. Plus, no free house , no free car, and they need to buy house like normal people... For current situation , people live and work in UK working hard to survive in this hard time , but MPs, they live in luxury life by eating people money....embarassing!

They actually eat the money?

While the expenses system has been open to abuse (and therefore has been abused) I don't think all the suggestions as to how to solve the problem are entirely realistic. It is important to remember that these people we've elected to represent our interests at a national and even international level - if we want the best to do so then we've got to pay wages roughly commensurate with that. Of course some people who are most suited for it will do it irrespective of the remuneration on offer but we are talking about a fairly vital function here so if paying a little more means we get the politicians we deserve then personally I'm happy to do so.

I think that a more transparent system is quite easily achievable - one option is that the MPs get a higher basic salary but allowances must be justified much more stringently and given in a much more limited set of circumstances.

What people don’t seem to understand is that a MP’s basic salary is really not that high and they are given generous packages to help compensate for that. Many of you may think that 70k is good salary but these are people that would make more than that if they were employed in industry.

They have families to support and if we don’t pay them well enough they will just have second jobs which would hamper them from serving our country or worst still they would not bother going into politics because they can make better money working for some company.

Do you really want a bunch of people running our country that are only there because: 1) that is the only job they can find or 2) they are so rich they do not need to work and just get into politics for the power?

Some of you lot need to jump off your bandwagon and understand that talented Individuals with experience deserve to be paid well, many of the people complaining about MP’s pay are the same lazy sods that where complaining about the “Fat Cat” salaries that were given to the top staff in private companies.

This is the typical jealous attitude the blights the uk population.

That made me think of this :D

That made me think of her 82-year-old husband's scrotum.

No its not, you cant expect them to live like the working class. MP's are people who are accustomed to a way of life and if you make working conditions really bad for them they will simply go into another profession.

Oh noes the bandwagon! Everyone is so clearly on it...

Jumping on the bandwagon of saying peope are jumping on the bandwagon, whatever next.
